        Feb. 20, 2016

        Elaine Mayes (American, b. 1936)

        Est: $700 - $1,000

Elaine Mayes (American, b. 1936), "Haleakala, Sunrise, Maui", 1990, and "Bandon Beach Sunset, Face Rock, Cats and Kittens, Oregon", 1995, 2 c-prints, signed, titled and dated en verso, eds. of 12, 20 in. x 24 in., framed alike. (2 pcs.) Note: Elaine Mayes’ work encompasses places, portraits and events from the past 50 years. During the 1960s, Mayes began her career photographing the rock and roll revolution in the San Francisco Bay Area, most notably the Haight Ashbury District and the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival, which was later published as a book It Happened in Monterey. From there, Mayes transitioned into teaching, sharing her experiences both as a photographer and photojournalist with students at Cooper Union; The International Center of Photography; Pratt Institute; Bard College; and New York University, where she was Chair of the Photography and Imaging Department from 1996 to retirement in 2001. Currently, Mayes is Professor Emeritus at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. The works offered here represent a period of Mayes’ oeuvre in which she assumed an “On the Road” persona – traveling and capturing through her lens the landscapes and societies of America. In particular, Mayes developed a fascination with Hawaii, beginning with a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1991 and continuing over twenty years of visiting and photographing the landscapes and people of the islands. In 2009, she published part of her “Hawaii” series in a limited edition book titled Ki’i no Hawai’i - Photographs of/from/about Hawaii Mayes’ photographs are included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and a number of other institutions across the United States.
