        Baluka Maymuru - Dhakandjali, 2003

        Est: $5,500 - $6,500

Baluka is the son of Nanyin Maymuru (1918-1969) the elder brother of Narritjin, one of Yirrkala’s most famous artists. Baluka is himself an important artist and also head man of the Manggalili clan. His major preoccupation is his dedication to his many ceremonial responsibilities. Long stretches are spent at remote homelands far from his own home. He is a fastidious and gifted as an artist in both the secular and ceremonal arena. He resides at Djarrakpi, the magnificent landscape at the northerly entrance of Blue Mud Bay. It is a place that is subject to the rich Manggalili mythology first brought to public attention by Narratjin and Nanyin. Baluka is able to produce no more than a few works each year. Yet his painstaking and precise technique is reflected in his two awards, nineteen years apart, in the same category (Three Dimensional) at the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards. This sculpture is a fine example.
