Vollständige erste Ausgabe. - Graesse IV, 457 - Ibrahim Hilmy II, 26 - Röhricht 1871. - Hiler 578. - Lipperheide Ma 22 (= 1589): "Kostüme, antike und moderne Baudenkmäler und Landschaften mit reicher Staffage." - Mit prachtvollen Ansichten von La Valletta, Kairo, Luxor, Medinet Habu, Philae, Jerusalem und vielen weiteren. Die großen Lithographien zeigen zahlreiche antike Ruinen, sowie Szenen aus Städten und von Reisenden. Herzog Maximilian von Bayern reiste 1838 aus München ab und machte sich auf den langen Weg über Athen in das "Heilige Land". - Stockfleckig, Ränder minimal gebräunt. Insgesamt ein sehr gut erhaltenes Exemplar mit 60 prachtvollen Lithographien der arabischen Welt. With tinted lithogr. title page and 60 partly tinted lithogr. plates. Half leather with gilt stamped spine label, upper cover of deliveries bound in (slightly bumped). - Full first edition. - Graesse IV, 457 - Ibrahim Hilmy II, 26 - Röhricht 1871 - Hiler 578 - Lipperheide Ma 22 (= 1589): "Costumes, ancient and modern monuments and landscapes with rich staffage". - With splendid views of La Valletta, Cairo, Luxor, Medinet Habu, Philae, Jerusalem and many more. The large lithographs show numerous ancient ruins as well as scenes of cities and travelers. Duke Maximilian of Bavaria left Munich in 1838 and made the long journey via Athens to the "Holy Land". - Foxing, margins minimally browned. Overall a very well-preserved copy with 60 splendid lithographs of the Arab world. Dieses Los ist regelbesteuert. Kuhn after P. Herweger and 15 plain plates by P. Herweger), foxing, occasionally heavy, hinges broken, contemporary green straight-grain morocco, gilt, worn, scuffed and with some remnants of paper adhered to lower cover, [Blackmer 1101; Lipperheide 1598; not in Abbey; not in Colas], folio, [Stuttgart, Ebner & Seubert], [c.1850]. *** Rare at auction with only one other copy (2013) since the Blackmer copy. "Mayr had accompanied Archduke Maximilian of Bavaria on his travels through Egypt, Syria and Palestine in 1838...The genre plates are essentially scenes from eastern life, e.g. 'Aertzlicher besuch im Harem' but Mayr has also included detailed plates of furniture, clothing, musical instruments and decorative tiles. The costume plates include that of a Greek woman at her embroidery (no.23)." (Blackmer).

Orientalischer Fürst rastet mit seinem Gefolge vor einer Bastion über dem Meer. Araberschimmel mit prächtigem Zaumzeug Lastkamel und Pferde. Fez tragende Diener und Soldaten. Im Hintergrund Zeltstadt Steilküste und Dreimaster auf dem Reede. Öl/Lwd. 44 x 56 cm. Originalrahmen der Zeit. Schon 1838 begleitete Mayr den abenteuerlustigen Herzog Maximilian Vater der späteren österreichischen Kaiserin Elisabeth (Sisi) auf einer acht Monate dauernden Reise nach Nubien Ägypten Palästina Syrien und Malta aus der zwei Veröffentlichungen erwuchsen: "Malerische Ansichten aus dem Orient" 1839 sowie "Genrebilder aus dem Oriente" bei Ebner und Seubert in Stuttgart 1846-50 erschienen. Die lithographierten Bilder hatten dokumentatorische Funktion und sollten dem Publikum Alltag und Gebräuche des fernen Orients nahebringen. Die Annäherung des Okzidents an den Orient begann als Folge der napoleonischen Feldzüge. Die Blütezeit der Orientmalerei lag in der 2. Hälfte des 19. Jh. Heinrich von Mayr gilt als einer ihrer frühesten und bedeutendsten Vertreter. Sein illustrer Auftraggeber Herzog Max entfloh seinem "bis zur Unbequemlichkeit bequemen Alltagsleben ..." um den unbekannten Orient zu bereisen beispielsweise das von dem für seine Brutalität bekannten Mehemed-Ali Pasha beherrschte Ägypten. Auf dem Kairoer Sklavenmarkt kaufte der Herzog fünf dunkelhäutige Knaben die er nach München mitbrachte und in der Frauenkirche taufen ließ
