Approximately 1054x1168 mm; 41½x46 inches (coat); 381x558 mm; 15x22 inches (hanger). Signed, titled and dated in ink, hanger verso. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist, private collection. Dindga McCannon made this unique duster coat which she wore to each opening of the traveling exhibition We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965 – 1985, organized by the Brooklyn Museum. Names, portraits, and exhibition posters of the collective, Where We At: Black Women Artists are emblazoned on the coat. The collective consisted of such artists as Carol Blank, Kay Brown, Faith Ringgold, Ann Tanksley, Miriam Francis, and Jamillah Jennings. The group served as a source of empowerment for African American women, exploring issues of Black women's sensibilities and aesthetics through art and exhibiton practice.

Exhibited: i found god in myself: the 40th anniversary of Ntozake Shange's for colored girls, the African American Museum in Philadelphia, October 6, 2016 - January 8, 2017. Highlighting the strength and wisdom of a woman who has fully experienced the peaks and valleys of life, Dindga McCannon portrays a Harlemite sharing her wisdom with others. A consummate Renaissance woman, McCannon is a painter, printmaker, fashion and jewelry designer, quilter/textile artist, author and illustrator. Harlem Elder Diva Speaks captures her ability to adapt various media to create textile works that convey narratives that are not often told. McCannon knew she wanted to be an artist from an early age, learning to sew from her mother and grandmother as a child. She chose not to attend college to study art - instead, she studied independently with artists Richard Mayhew, Al Hollingsworth and Charles Alston. McCannon became a member of the Weusi Artist Collective in the late 1960s, and was a founding member of "Where We At", Black Women Artists, Inc. (WWA), a collective of Black women artists affiliated with the Black Arts Movement. McCannon, Faith Ringgold and Kay Brown held the first WWA meeting in early 1971 in McCannon's Brooklyn home. McCannon also illustrated several books by Edgar White as well as wrote and illustrated two books of her own, Peaches and Wilhemina Jones, Future Star. Her artworks are in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Michigan State University, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the Studio Museum in Harlem.

Provenance: the Johnson Publishing Company, Inc., Chicago. The Last Farewell is a significant painting by Dindga McCannon, made when she began to define her aesthetic in the early 1970s. Born and raised in Harlem, Dindga McCannon is a truly versatile artist; she is a painter, printmaker, fashion and jewelry designer, quilter/textile artist, author and illustrator. McCannon knew she wanted to be an artist from an early age, learning to sew from her mother and grandmother as a child. McCannon chose not to attend college to study art - instead she studied independently. She learned printmaking at Bob Blackburn's Printmaking Workshop, and painting privately with artists Richard Mayhew, Al Hollingsworth and Charles Alston. McCannon became a member of the Weusi Artist Collective in the late 1960s, and then was a founding member of "Where We At", Black Women Artists, Inc. (WWA), a collective of black women artists affiliated with the Black Arts Movement. McCannon, Faith Ringgold and Kay Brown held the first WWA meeting in early 1971 in McCannon's Brooklyn home. She is a painter, printmaker, fashion and jewelry designer, quilter/textile artist, author and illustrator. McCannon knew she wanted to be an artist from an early age, learning to sew from her mother and grandmother as a child. McCannon chose not to attend traditional 4 year college for art but studied printmaking atBob Blackburn's Printmaking Workshop, a discipline she would later go on to teach to others, and engaged in private study with artists including Richard Mayhew, Al Holligsworth and Charles Alston. Dindga later became a member of the Weusi Artist Collective and in 1971 became a founding member of Where We At, Black Women Artists, Inc., which provided a showcase for black women artists. Other members of the collective included Faith Ringgold and Vivian Browne among others. Also during her career, McCannon illustrated three books by Edgar White, and wrote and illustrated two books of her own, Peaches and Wilhemina Jones, Future Star. This vibrant print is one of the first works by McCannon to come to auction. King-Hammond 157.
