I am a journalist, photographer and artist based in Dublin, Ireland. I enjoy taking artistic photos and painting on large canvases. My photography websites can be seen on www.barbaramccarthy.ie. I have only been taking photos professionally since late 2009. I really hope to expand my range and improve my craft this year. I mostly enjoy writing cutting edge features and taking the photos to go with them.

I was a journalist for 10 years for newspapers including the Sunday Times and The Independent before I added photography to my portfolio. I paint in my spare time and have had 2 exhibitions in Dublin in the last year. Again I want to improve my skills this year.

    42 x 59.4 cm Signed / Unframed / Edition of 3 "I was going for my daily lockdown midday walk out the West pier in Dun Laoghaire, but the incoming sea mist created such a spectacle, that I went back home and got my camera. When I returned, the sun was setting, creating a stunning view I have seldom seen in Dun Laoghaire before. The yellow glow, the boats, the shimmering sea and mist transported me elsewhere.     Artwork Information: Signed: Yes Framed: No Original: Yes Numbered Edition: Yes Edition Info: 3 of Artist Information: This image was taken after a sandstorm at Burning Man in the Nevada Desert in 2018. The Orb, which was created by Bjarke Ingels and Jakob Lange, was an 85-foot-diameter inflatable sphere designed to reflect the expanse of Nevada's Black Rock Desert alongside the then theme- "I, Robot." The "mirror for earth lovers" was made to a scale of 1/500,000 of our planet’s surface. Constructed from the same materials as NASA use for weather balloons, it ended up being a big ball of dust- like everything else at Burning Man rather than a mirror, but that was OK too. The giraffe is horselike and imposing. After a massive sandstorm in the desert cleared, it just appeared out of the dust. It's a really surreal piece and most certainly different to anything I've seen. I work as a photographer, journalist and artist in Ireland and around the world. The image was taken at Burning Man in 2018. The sphere was the highly anticipated centre piece at Burning Man when the theme was 'I Robot.' Designed by architects Bjarke Ingels and Jakob Lange, the inflatable ORB had an 85-foot-inflatable diameter and was described as a "mirror for earth lovers." At a scale of 1/500,000 of our planet’s surface, the 'mirror,' which was constructed using the same chromatic fabric as NASA weather balloon, got covered in dust, as everything else does in Back Rock Desert.
