ALEX MCLEOD, MYSTICAL POND, 2011, edition 1/1, 48" x 32" - 120 x 80 cm.Note: Born in Toronto in 1984, Alex McLeod studied Art Fundamentals at George Brown College and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Ontario College of Art and Design. McLeod studied drawing, then switched to 3-D computer-generated digital imagery. He uses his knowledge and appreciation for both to create CGI images of fantastical, romantic, otherworldly and anonymous dystopias. The colourful and polished landscapes combine the real and the virtual in a manner both seductively sweet and darkly whimsical. And while these views of glimmering fortresses, bizarre architecture and surreal geometric abstractions may suggest a startling stillness or a haunting apocalyptic world, they ultimately convey a certain happiness, or as the artist explains it, "possibilities for hope and rebirth in our own digital milieu." While his photographs look as though they were manufactured by hand and then photographed, the only real thing that truly exists is the paper they are printed on. Despite his young age, McLeod has exhibited worldwide in Barcelona, San Jose, Sao Paulo and Toronto. His accolades include the Toronto Arts Council Media Artist award. His work is held in the collection of the Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art in Toronto, as well as the corporate collections of BMO Financial Group, TORYS LLP and MMPI Canada.
