2 Carl McKenzie Figures, Uncle Sam & Daniel Boone

            Est: $400 - $500

Carl McKenzie (Kentucky, 1905-1998), two carved wood figures. 1st item: "Uncle Sam," with cotton beard, 16", signed in marker underside of base. 2nd item: "Daniel Boone with Rifle," 17 1/2" H, signed in pencil with address and dated Nov. 26, 1984. Biography: Carl McKenzie learned to whittle as a child from his grandfather and was also inspired by Edgar Tolson of the Campton school of Appalachian wood carvers. Carving eventually became his full-time occupation. The Daniel Boone Trading Post, a tourist stop near Natural Bridge State Park, was one of the first places to sell his work, and it was so popular McKenzie could barely keep up with demand. He is said to have used white pine or birch for carving and made his own brushes from split twigs. The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Art Museum held a traveling retrospective of his work in 1994 and his work has also been exhibited at the Ohio Arts Council's Riffe Gallery and The Kentucky Folk Art Center in Morehead, Kentucky.
