Judy Kensley McKie (American, b. 1944). Large "Owl Vessel" in the form of an owl. Initialed, dated 2000, and numbered 3/16 along the underside of the top rim. McKie began to hone her skills in the 1960s while in the cooperative workspace "New Hamburger Cabinet Works." While there she worked with other furniture makers such as Michael Hurwitz. In the 70s she began incorporating her own ideas and designs, usually inspired by animal and plant motifs. Though these designs started on flat surfaces she quickly moved on to structural and sculptural elements such as the lovely owl offered here. Her work has been exhibited at the American Craft Museum in New York City, the Pritam & Eames gallery, and the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco. Additionally, her works are also in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Judy McKie (American, b. 1944) Giving Bear, 1988 Monotype on paper 19-1/2 x 15-3/4 inches (49.5 x 40.0 cm) (image) Signed, dated, and titled in pencil in lower margin PROPERTY OF A LADY, MONTAUK, NEW YORK In celebration of Women's History Month Judy Kensley McKie is a noted furniture maker and designer whose work is characterized by an enormous sense of whimsy. She earned a B.F.A. degree in painting in 1966, at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, and became a self-taught furniture maker of necessity in order to furnish her home. She continued to excel in the craft, learning through trial and error, and worked in a furniture-making cooperative until she resolved to create one-of-a-kind pieces. McKie derives inspiration from ancient Greek and Egyptian art, Pre-Columbian, African, Indian, and Eskimo cultures, and folk art. Her designs are usually based upon animal forms. She was the recipient of a Massachusetts Artists' Foundation fellowship in 1980, a Certificate of Design Excellence award in 1986, and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation award in 1989. The present lot is an example of her work in printmaking media. HID04901242017
