    ARTIST: BLANCHE MCMANUS (1869-1935) SIZE: 15 3/8 x 20 1/2 in./39 x 52.2 cm DESCRIPTION: McManus was born in Louisiana and studied art in Paris. She was a prolific writer, book illustrator, and graphic designer—a pioneer for women in the arts in America. She authored and contributed to some 60 titles, including illustrating Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and producing her own children’s series called “Little Cousin.” Here, she advertises the newest work by female author H. A. Guerber (Hélène Adeline Guerber), whose books largely focused on lively retellings of myths, legends, folklore, and history. (Art Nouveau; Literary; American)

Hinged to mat at top edge. Paper. Born in Louisiana, McManus studied in Paris before returning to America, where her brief poster career flourished. She is attributed with having designed 8 posters, and is considered one of the best female designers of the era (along with Florence Lundborg, Ethel Reed and Alice Glenny). Shortly after the turn-of-the-century, she returned to Paris and worked as a book illustrator. She wrote and illustrated at least one book of her own, The True Mother Goose (and created a poster for it), as well as authoring The American Woman Abroad and Our French Cousins. "Her posters are boldly conceived, with a sure sense of the well-drawn line and a controlled use of contrasting color to create a positive and negative image" (Kiehl p. 189).
