    James Abbott McNeil Whistler (American, 1834-1903), etching titled "Black Lion Wharf", created in 1859 as part of scenes on the Thames set. Signed and dated in the plate. Depicts a scene on the Thames River. Plate size seen approx. 8-5/8" x 6", overall frame size approx. 16-1/2" x 14". Small tear at the top left outer margin, and bottom right margin has what appears to be a paper pull or tear. Image is not affected. This lot is being offered on behalf of the Bronx County Public Administrator from the Estate of Miriam Castle Melnick #273/21.

The influence of Japanese prints on his work is apparent here in the high horizon, the decorative arrangement of bamboo sprays, and the butterfly monogram (Frick Collection).

The work depicts the Scottish social critic, philosopher and historian Thomas Carlyle in a composition similar to that of Whistler''s "Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Artist''s Mother", painted in 1871. Carlyle saw the work, and asked that Whistler paint him in the same manner.
