Artist Biography: John McQueen studied at Florida State University, Tallahassee, in 1961-63 and the University of Indiana in Bloomington in 1964-65 before completing a B.A. at the University of South Florida in Tampa in 1971 and an M.F.A. at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 1975. He has received three National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowships and a United States/Japan Friendship Commission Fellowship. He has participated in several exhibitions, including shows at the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Kansas City Art Institute, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, and the Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum in Trondheim, Norway.

He earned a B.A. in 1971 from the University of South Florida, Tampa and a M.F.A. in 1975 from Tyler School of Art. A self-proclaimed “maker,” McQueen is best known for his sculptural basketry constructed from natural, gathered materials. Redefining the conventional form, his work investigates the concept of containment, explores the connection between humans and the natural environment, and continually pushes the boundary between art and craft. McQueen was the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1977, 1979, and 1986. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including a solo show at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 1992. Examples can be found in the permanent collections of institutions worldwide, including the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Art; the Museum of Arts and Design, New York; the Racine Art Museum; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Figure comprised of various twigs held together with zip ties; figure appears full-bodied and complete, with minimal to no losses; figure is tied and attached to pedestal base; bark in good overall condition, with stitching intact and even darkened red patina with traces of natural sap and white colored patches; approximately 18 in. up from base, small area (approximately 2 1/2 x 1 in.) with splits to bark (split is largely cosmetic and does not otherwise impact structural integrity of work); a few other scattered areas of abrasion and minor edge wear, some inherent to the materials and apparently in the making of.
