This work, early as it may seem, is part of a series of works which had its culmination in a group of works collectively known as 'Orangemen Leaving Church', which McWilliams began in the mid-1990s. To the left is clearly seen a figure of the Royal Ulster Constabulary, now known as the Police Service of Northern Ireland, no doubt ostensibly in charge of this part of the march. Given the high-rise building in the background the setting for the scene seems to be central Belfast. The banners in the parade can also be seen as the marchers wind their way to ‘the field’, where they will listen to political speeches. The symbolism implicit in the ‘Cul de sac road ends ’ sign is no doubt intentional. As always, paintings by McWilliams of this time are very colourful and bright.Dr SB Kennedy November 2016

He began lecturing in art education at the Ulster Polytechnic in 1973 and later became senior lecturer. He opened the Cavehill Gallery in 1986 in Belfast with his wife Catherine, while the continuing success of his own pictures saw him elected RUA in 1994 and President of the Academy from 2000 to 2004. Due to the political content of much of McWilliams's work he has often been compared to Rita Duffy.

Provenance: Cavehill Gallery, Belfast; Collection of Bill Craig, former Northern Ireland Minister Private collection Exhibited: 'Troubled Journey', Cavehill Gallery, Belfast, 1989, catalogue no. 27 Joseph McWilliams was born in Belfast and studied at the Belfast College of Art and at the Open University. McWilliams' work is rooted in Northern Ireland, its landscapes and politics and his 'Troubled Journey' series is perhaps his best known body of work chronicling the conflict in Northern Ireland. In 1986, along with his partner Catherine, he established the Cave Hill Gallery, Belfast. He has exhibited widely both in Ireland and abroad, most recently in an exhibition entitled, 'Dreams and Traditions: 300 Years of British and Irish Painting' from the Ulster Museum Collection which toured the USA in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institute, Washington. His work can be found in the collection of the Northern Ireland Arts Council, Queen's University, Córas Iompair Éireann, the Department of the Environment (NI), AIB and the National Self Portrait Collection of Ireland among others.
