      Oil on canvas, relined France, around 1850 Constant Troyon (1810-1865) – French lanscape and animal painter Monogrammed 'C.T.' lower left On the scratchers frame labeled by the art dealer Alexander Schott, Munich Dimensions: 32.8 x 41 cm Gilt stucco frame: 50.5 x 58.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Southern Germany Beautiful small-scale animal painting made by the French artist Constant Troyon who was associated with the famous Barbizon school Condition: The painting is in good condition. The varnish has been slightly darkened and tiny craquelé can be seen overall on the canvas. There are areas with scuffing due to the frame along the upper edges and corners of the canvas. The painting has been skillfully repaired. Several retouched spots can be seen mainly affecting the upper edges. The edges of the canvas are masked. The frame is in good condition too with traces of usage. The dimensions are 32.8 x 41 cm and the frame measures 50.5 x 58.5 cm. Constant Troyon (1810-1865) Constant Troyon was a French landscape and animal painter who was associated with the famous Barbizon school. Troyon started as porcelain painter at the manufacture of his hometown Sèvres. His farther worked as well in the factory and the artist had his first painting lessons in this time. He got in contact with the painters of Barbizon school, among others with Théodore Rousseau, the founder of the artist colony, through the help of his posterior teacher Camille Roqueplan. The painters of Barbizon supported a renewal of the view of nature, which had an important influence on Troyon and his work. The artist transferred the liberated view of nature on the depiction of animals and became an important animal painter in his time. Works of the artist are in the collections of the following famous museums: Louvre, Paris; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; Metropolitan Museum, New York; Ermitage in Sankt Petersburg.
