    M. Medina Original Indian Buffalo Dancer Painting

    Est: $300 - $600

Offered in this lot is an exceptional original water color by Zia Pueblo artist, Marcellus Medina (b. 1954-). He was born into a family of famous Zia potters and his mother was Sofia Medina. Marcellus is a self-taught painter and his wife, Elizabeth, (famous for her pottery) often makes a pot while Marcellus paints the design on it, in addition to his own artwork. Very little of Medina's work is on the market and is highly sought after by collectors. This painting is of a Buffalo Hunt dancer. In this series of paintings, Medina did each dancer from the front and a smaller view from the back. The painting is marked in the lower right corner with Marcellus Medina's hallmark. The painting is professionally double matted and framed in a smooth wood frame with rounded edges. There are a few minor marks to the paper pre framing, but overall this original painting is in good condition. The shown art measures 15 1/2" x 11 1/2" and the frame is 20 3/4" x 16 3/4".

  • Marcellus & Elizabeth Medina Pottery Zia Pot

Marcellus & Elizabeth Medina Pottery Zia Pot

    Est: -

Elizabeth and Marcellus Medina are terrific potters working in Zia Pueblo today. Originally from Jemez, Elizabeth has lived in Zia Pueblo since 1978 and learned the art of traditional pottery-making from her mother-in-law, Sofia Medina. Marcellus (b. 1954) is a self-taught painter who works in watercolors and acrylics. Marcellus is a grandson of Juanita Pino, and a son of Sofia and Rafael Medina. His style is influenced by the work of his uncle, JD Medina. Oftentimes, the husband-and-wife team collaborate to create their traditional pottery. They still collect the natural clays, and mineral and vegetal paints. They also continue to use traditional firing methods. In their pottery collaborations, Elizabeth coils their pots by hand and Marcellus paints the stunning, detailed designs onto each piece. They have received many accolades and awards over the years at Indian Market in Santa Fe as well as other Native art shows. Keywords: Native American, Indian; Ref: BD1043
