  • Italian school; Inspired by ANGELINO MEDORO model (Italy, 1567-1631); c. 1600. "Madonna of silence". Oil on copper.
    Apr. 03, 2025

Italian school; Inspired by ANGELINO MEDORO model (Italy, 1567-1631); c. 1600. "Madonna of silence". Oil on copper.

    Est: €1,800 - €2,000

Italian school; Inspired by ANGELINO MEDORO model (Italy, 1567-1631); c. 1600. "Madonna of silence". Oil on copper. Measurements: 22,5 x 16,5 cm; 32 x 27 cm (frame). This work follows the model imposed by Angelino Medoro whose work is in the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville and was made around 1622. Although it is true that in this case the presence of Saint Joseph is not appreciated, nor Saint Dominic. In this case the author focuses the scene only on the Virgin, the Child, who is sleeping and St. Johnny who looks directly at the viewer and brings his index finger to his lips demanding silence to whoever observes the scene. Angelino Medoro was an Italian painter of the 17th century, active in Latin America. His work in the Viceroyalty of Peru greatly influenced the artistic movement of the Cuzco school. It is believed that Medoro studied art in Rome, then traveled to Seville and the New Kingdom of Granada (present-day Colombia). His only surviving work of European art was the painting "Flagellation of Christ" (1586) in Seville. Medoro, along with Bernardo Bitti and Matteo da Lecce (or Matteo Perez de Alesio in Spanish) were the three founders of Peruvian colonial painting. His earliest work in America was Virgen de la Antigua (1587-1588) in the church of Santo Domingo in Bogota. In 1617, he painted a portrait of Santa Rosa de Lima in the Sanctuary of Santa Rosa de Lima (also known as the Church of Santa Rosa in Lima). His pupils included Pedro de Loayza (or Pedro Loayza), Luis de Riaño and Juan de Mesa. Medoro returned to Spain after 1620 and died in Seville in 1631.

ATTRIBUTED TO ANGELINO MEDORO (ROME, CIRCA 1565 - SEVILLE, 1632)

    Est: €6,000 - €9,000

Attributed to Angelino Medoro (Rome, circa 1565 - Seville, 1632) 'Our Lady of Silence' Oil on copper. Accompanied by an imposing cornucopia frame in carved and gilded wood. 24 x 19 cm. Frame measurements: 70 x 54 cm. Angelino Medoro was an Italian painter with a wide and diverse repertoire who settled in the Viceroyalty of Peru, via Spain. His art was particularly influential in Peru, fundamentally in the painting of Cusco. In 1587, he moved to Santafé, in the New Kingdom of Granada, after having resided in Seville since his youth. He was also active in Tunja, Cali, and from 1600 in Lima. He returned to Seville in 1629, where he died three years later. The 'Our Lady of the Antigua' that he painted in Santafé in 1587 for the Santo Domingo temple is worth mentioning, because, in Seville style, it was accompanied by the donors Diego Hernández Hervalle and Polonia de Rosa. We are talking about one of the first portraits painted in the New Granada, which gives it immense value for the history of Colombian art, as noted by the Royal Academy of History. There is also significant value in another portrait painted in Lima in 1617, 'Portrait of Isabel Torres de Oliva,' who was the first saint of Latin America, Saint Rose of Lima. 'It was widely distributed not only on the American continent but also in Europe, through engravings.' In addition, other important works are attributed to him such as “a ‘Descent from the Cross’, inspired by the painting with the same theme by Pedro Pablo Rubens for the Cathedral of Antwerp, and a ‘Lamentation’, which now belong to the Convent of Santo Domingo de Tunja”, as well as a “Penitent Mary Magdalene” for the church of San Francisco and the paintings for the Mancipe chapel, which he finished in 1598, a year before his moving to Cali. During his stay of approximately one year in the city, he worked for the Franciscans, making a “Saint Anthony of Padua” and a sculpture of “Our Lady of Perpetual Help”, the only sculpture known to be by him. Once settled in Lima, where he was appointed painter of the Inquisition, he completed several paintings, such as a “Lord of the Column”, the famous 1617 portrait that we mentioned earlier and a “Santa Margarita” that is currently in Bogota, among many other artworks that are currently distributed between various churches and chapels in Lima and Bogota, and in private collections in Bogota and Cali, among other locations. Once settled again in Seville, despite being around seventy years old, he was still given an exam as a painter by, among others, Alonso Cano. He, who was known as 'El Romano', died in 1632. ATTRIBUTED TO ANGELINO MEDORO (ROMA, CIRCA 1565 - SEVILLA, 1632)

    Est: €15,000 - €20,000

Attributed to Angelino Medoro (Roma, circa 1565 - Sevilla, 1632) “Patronage of Our Lady of Mercy” Oil on canvas. relined. 113 x 95 cm. Wonderful canvas from New Spain, richly framed in fine gold, with one of the most popular representations in New Spain art, the so-called Patrocinio, which shows the Virgin (in this case) or a saint protecting under her mantle communities, religious orders, corporations and authorities, (with a clientelistic and corporate scheme typical of the Ancient Regime), main recipients of her heavenly benefits. Our Lady of Mercy and the Redemption of the Captives is the Queen and Lady of the Order of Mercy (in Latin: Ordo Beatæ Mariæ Virginis de Redemptione Captivorum), a Catholic mendicant religious order, founded in 1218 by St. Peter Nolasco (ca. 1180-1245) for the redemption of Christian captives in the hands of Muslims. The Mercedarians committed themselves with a fourth vow, to liberate others weaker in the faith, even if their lives were in danger for it. This Virgin of Mercy, crowned “as queen” of heaven, protects under her wide mantle, raised and supported by two angels, the church and its representatives, the Pope and the King with his subjects. The Pope we see is Gregory IX, who approves this religious order in 1235 with the Bull Devotionis vestrae; and next to him St. Raymond Nonnatus, another of the “principals” of this order; the king, James I of Aragon, known as “the conqueror” and, next to him, its founder St. Peter Nolasco; it seems that St. Mary of Cervellon, founder of the female branch, is under the Virgin's mantle. All, without exception, are prostrate, surrendering to their Virgin and Lady Queen with both knees, an external gesture that expresses the greatest sign of submission. On the floor, scattered shackles, symbols of the redeemed captives. An important 19th century frame, richly stuccoed and gilded, encloses and completes the beauty and devotion of this work.   Bibliographic reference: - Ojeda, Almerindo. 2005-2024.
