ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1857 - 1940). "Surroundings of Manresa".1936-39. Oil on canvas. Signed.

            Est: €4,000 - €5,000

ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1857 - 1940). "Surroundings of Manresa".1936-39. Oil on canvas. Signed. Measurements: 62 x 50 cm; 75 x 63 cm (frame). In his landscapes, Meifrén managed to suggest emotional states through a precise atmospheric capture. In this painting, the wide sky, favored by a low point of view, is covered with clouds laden with spring rain. The sky projects its silvery tones on the river. Trees with very long bare trunks grow on the riverbank, where a peasant woman walks with two sheep. In the distance, a farmhouse can be seen in the distance. Nature, with a chromatic symphony of emerald, glaucous and earthy greens, expresses itself, captured "a plein air" with a quick and free brushstroke. A disciple of Antonio Caba at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, after finishing his studies he spent some time in Paris, where he coincided with the public beginning of impressionism and became acquainted with "a plen air" painting. He returned to Barcelona in 1879 and, that same year, he won the gold medal at the Regional Exhibition of Valencia. The following year he made his individual debut at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, where he continued to exhibit regularly from then on. He was part of the modernist group, and frequented Els Quatre Gats. Although he also dedicated himself to portraiture, Meifrèn was eminently a landscape and marine painter. He was one of the discoverers of the pictorial possibilities of Cadaqués, and he also used to paint Mallorcan landscapes (he was director of the School of Fine Arts in Palma). He made several trips in search of new landscapes, especially to France but also to the Canary Islands, Belgium, Italy and the United States. He held exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid (1881), Chicago (1893), Paris (1899), Brussels (1910), Santiago de Chile (1910), Buenos Aires (1910), Amsterdam (1912) and San Francisco (1915), among many other cities around the world. His style began with the detailed realism that dominated the Catalan school at the end of the 19th century, and gradually evolved towards impressionism, a language that would not be fully evident in his work until his last years. Throughout his career he won a multitude of awards, including the first medals at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid (1906) and Barcelona (1896), the Nonell prize in Barcelona (1935), the bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris (1888) and the grand prizes at the International Exhibitions of Buenos Aires (1910) and San Diego (1916). In 1952, the Barcelona City Council dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him, held at the Palacio de la Virreina. He is represented in the Museo del Prado, the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the MACBA in Barcelona and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, among many others.

ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1857 - 1940). "Marina". Oil on panel. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. The frame in gilded wood has slight flaws.

            Est: €800 - €900

ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1857 - 1940). "Marina". Oil on panel. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. The frame in gilded wood has slight flaws. Measurements: 32 x 26 cm; 52 x 42 cm (frame). We see in this panel a peaceful scene starring the swell of an active sea, absolutely protagonist, which seems an echo of the ominous sky full of clouds. The composition is simple, avoiding anecdotal details that could break the atmosphere and the narrative, and the natural elements -the sea and the sky- are the absolute protagonists. A painter of landscapes and seascapes, Eliseo Meifrèn is considered one of the first introducers of the Impressionist movement in Catalonia. He began his artistic training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Antonio Caba and Ramón Martí Alsina, with whom he began to create romantic landscapes of academic style. After finishing his studies, in 1878, he moved to Paris in order to broaden his artistic knowledge, and there he got to know first hand the "plen air" painting, which would influence him powerfully in his Parisian landscapes of those years. Likewise, in Paris he coincided with the public beginning of impressionism. A year later he made a trip to Italy, during which he visited Naples, Florence, Venice and Rome; there he made contact with the circle of Catalan artists formed by Ramón Tusquets, Arcadio Mas i Fondevila, Enrique Serra, Antonio Fabrés and Joan Llimona, among others. That same year, 1879, he participated in the Regional Exhibition of Valencia, and won a gold medal. Once back in Barcelona, in 1880 he made his individual debut in the Sala Parés in Barcelona, where he continued to exhibit regularly since then. During these years he was part of the modernist group, and frequented Els Quatre Gats. In 1883 he returned to Paris, where he made numerous drawings and watercolors with views of the city and its cafés, which earned him a warm welcome from French critics and the French public. At the end of the eighties he returned to Barcelona and continued to show his work at the Sala Parés, as well as at the Centro de Acuarelistas. Also, in 1888 he was a member of the jury of the Universal Exhibition held in Barcelona. In 1890 he returned for the third time to the French capital, where he participated in the Salon des Beaux-Arts and in the Salon des Indépendants of 1892, together with Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol, artists with whom he had formed the pictorial group of Sitges a year earlier. In the following years Meifrèn would send his works to numerous official exhibitions and competitions, among them the National Exhibitions of Madrid and Barcelona, and was awarded the third medal at the Paris Universal of 1889 and 1899, silver medal at the Brussels Universal of 1910, grand prize at the Buenos Aires Universal of the same year, medal of honor at the San Francisco International of 1915 and grand prize at the San Diego International of the following year. He also won the Nonell Prize of Barcelona in 1935. In 1952, the Barcelona City Council dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him, held at the Palacio de la Virreina. His initial landscapes, characterized by an academic and romantic concept, would later evolve towards an impressionist language; abandoning the Roman preciosism, his would be a technique of loose brushstrokes and clear palette, in which the luminous conception approaches symbolist budgets, within the orbit of Modesto Urgell. He is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the MACBA in Barcelona and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, among many others.

ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1859 - 1940). "Cadaqués". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 37 x 44 cm; 60 x 67 cm (frame). The mythical town of the Empordà was one of Meifrèn's favorite places. Throughout his life he repeated his visits to Cadaqués, and in spite of his successful itinerancies around the world, he never stopped having in mind the peaceful life licked by the Mediterranean. This painting belongs to a period of maturity, in which the mastery of light is remarkable, resulting in successful verdigris glazes, in beautiful contrast to the line of whitewashed houses and vibrant figures swarming along its margins. A painter of landscapes and seascapes, Eliseo Meifrèn is considered one of the first introducers of the impressionist movement in Catalonia. Measurements: 50.5 x 60 cm; 67 x 77 cm (frame). A disciple of Antonio Caba at the La Lonja School in Barcelona, after completing his studies he spent time in Paris, where he coincided with the public beginning of Impressionism and learned about “à plen air” painting. He returned to Barcelona in 1879 and, that same year, obtained the gold medal at the Valencia Regional Exhibition. The following year he made his individual debut at the Parés room in Barcelona, where he will continue to exhibit regularly since then. He was part of the modernist group, and frequented Els Quatre Gats. Although he also dedicated himself to portraiture, Meifrèn was eminently a landscape and marinist. He was one of the discoverers of the pictorial possibilities of Cadaqués, and also used to paint Majorcan landscapes (he was director of the School of Fine Arts of Palma). He made various trips in search of new landscapes, especially to France but also to the Canary Islands, Belgium, Italy and the United States. He held exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid (1881), Chicago (1893), Paris (1899), Brussels (1910), Santiago de Chile (1910), Buenos Aires (1910), Amsterdam (1912) and San Francisco (1915), among many other cities around the world. His style started from the detailed realism that dominated the Catalan school at the end of the 19th century, gradually evolving towards impressionism, a language that would not be completely evident in his work until his final years. Throughout his career he obtained many awards, including the first medals at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid (1906) and in Barcelona (1896), the Nonell prize from Barcelona (1935), the bronze medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition (1888) and the grand prizes at the International Expositions of Buenos Aires (1910) and San Diego (1916). In 1952, the Barcelona City Council dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him, held in the Palacio de la Virreina. He is represented in the Prado Museum, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, among many others.

The first works by Eliseo Meifrén located in the town of Cadaqués in Empordà date from 1893, as a result of an Artistic Demonstration at the Ateneu in Barcelona, where he presented, among other works, a Marina de Cadaqués. Size: 60 x 120 cm; 81 x 140 cm (frame). Eliseo Meifrén captures in this painting a subjective nature, of romantic influence. He chooses a day with an ominous sky full of clouds, looking for a cold, twilight and mysterious atmosphere that gives nature a special lyricism. There is a development of spatial depth; the space is perfectly constructed in the foreground, with calm waters that serve as a backdrop to an intermediate plane with large rocks; acting as a backdrop, a blurred and confused scene, as if covered by a dense fog. In the foreground Meifrén's brushstrokes are dense and precise, and he constructs the forms on the basis of the rich, varied chromaticism and the subtle, carefully studied changes of light and shade. The low lights of the sunset welcome an agitated sea whose waves break against a rocky coast. A solitary woman with a fishing rod perched on her shoulder walks along the shore. The earthy colours of the sand and the glaucous colours of the sea mist compete to conquer the pictorial space, resolved with Meifrèn's characteristic firm, energetic strokes. In the following years Meifrèn submitted his works to numerous official exhibitions and competitions, including the National Exhibitions of Madrid and Barcelona, and was awarded third medals at the Paris Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1899, a silver medal at the Brussels Universal Exhibition of 1910, a grand prize at the Buenos Aires Universal Exhibition of the same year, a medal of honour at the San Francisco International Exhibition of 1915 and a grand prize at the San Diego Exhibition the following year. He also won the Nonell Prize in Barcelona in 1935. In 1952, Barcelona City Council dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him, held at the Palau de la Virreina. His initial landscapes, characterised by an academic and romantic concept, would later evolve towards an impressionist language; having abandoned Romanesque preciosity, his would be a technique of loose brushstrokes and a clear palette, in which the luminous conception approached symbolist premises, within the orbit of Modesto Urgell. He is currently represented in the Museo del Prado, the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the MACBA in Barcelona and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, among many others.

            Est: €800 - €900

ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1857 - 1940). "Port". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 9 x 14 cm; 28 x 32 cm (frame). Meifrén, in spite of being a tireless traveller and travelling all over Europe and America, always had the Ampurdà as a reference point, both Cadaqués and Llançà and, in general, the steep Costa Brava, in its part bordering France. This port has been resolved with a bold and rapid brushstroke, although subjected to a studied palette of light tones, with deep plastic wisdom that induces self-absorbed contemplation. A disciple of Antonio Caba at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, after completing his studies he spent some time in Paris, where he coincided with the public beginning of Impressionism and became acquainted with "plen air" painting. He returned to Barcelona in 1879 and that same year he won the gold medal at the Regional Exhibition in Valencia. The following year he made his individual debut at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, where he continued to exhibit regularly from then on. He was a member of the Modernist group and frequented Els Quatre Gats. Although he was also a portraitist, Meifrèn was eminently a landscape and marine painter. He was one of the discoverers of the pictorial possibilities of Cadaqués, and he also used to paint Mallorcan landscapes (he was director of the School of Fine Arts in Palma). He made several trips in search of new landscapes, especially to France, but also to the Canary Islands, Belgium, Italy and the United States. He held exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid (1881), Chicago (1893), Paris (1899), Brussels (1910), Santiago de Chile (1910), Buenos Aires (1910), Amsterdam (1912) and San Francisco (1915), among many other cities around the world. His style began with the detailed realism that dominated the Catalan school at the end of the 19th century and gradually evolved towards Impressionism, a language that would not be fully evident in his work until his last years. Throughout his career he won numerous prizes, including the first medals at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid (1906) and Barcelona (1896), the Nonell prize in Barcelona (1935), the bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris (1888) and the grand prizes at the International Exhibitions of Buenos Aires (1910) and San Diego (1916).
