The one that we now present is a work of Meifrén already clearly impressionist, with a purely chromatic and luminous treatment of the landscape, that leaves aside the meticulous description of the natural model to capture an impression of nature, a purely visual and totally plastic image, in which the loose, impastoed and precise brushstroke configures forms, spaces and volumes based on juxtaposing colors. The forms are blurred and become pure expressive stain; the light, worked and thought, acquires a renewed prominence, and nature takes on a new atmospheric dimension, which goes beyond the pure reproduction of reality. A painter of landscapes and seascapes, Eliseo Meifrèn is considered to be one of the first introducers of the impressionist movement in Catalonia. He also won the Nonell Prize of Barcelona in 1935. In 1952, the Barcelona City Council dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him, held at the Palacio de la Virreina. His initial landscapes, characterized by an academic and romantic concept, would later evolve towards an impressionist language; abandoning the Roman preciosism, his would be a technique of loose brushstrokes and clear palette, in which the luminous conception approaches symbolist budgets, within the orbit of Modesto Urgell. He is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the MACBA in Barcelona and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, among many others.

ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1859 - 1940). "Lake landscape". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner.

    Est: €20,000 - €22,000

ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1859 - 1940). "Lake landscape". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 50 x 60 cm; 76 x 86 cm (frame). Eliseo Meifrén, master of luminism and Catalan impressionism, captures in this lake landscape a serene and ethereal atmosphere, where light and color merge in a delicate balance. The composition is structured in subtle layers that provide depth and visual harmony. In the foreground, a row of bare, scrawny stems, barely dotted with a few leaves, stands like a fragile vegetal curtain between the viewer and the lake. The lake spreads out gently, dominated by a palette of blues, ceruleans and grays that reflect the changing sky. The watery surface delicately refracts the light. Meifrén's loose, enveloping brushwork blurs the contours, achieving a fusion of natural elements that enhances the sense of atmosphere and depth. On the horizon, a line of bluish mountain range is delicately insinuated, merging with the play of light. The sky is wide, dotted with passing clouds. The painter's luminist technique is manifested in the soft hallmarks and the richness of nuances, where light and air acquire an almost tangible presence. The result is an evocative landscape, with a melancholic appearance. A painter of landscapes and seascapes, Eliseo Meifrèn is considered one of the first introducers of the impressionist movement in Catalonia. A forest clearing comes to life in this painting of Eliseo Meifrén with a balanced composition and a luminous atmosphere dominated by the jogosas shades of green. In the foreground, leafy trees stand out with loose and dynamic brushstrokes, where the green is broken down into shades of ochre and yellow, capturing the play of light among the leaves. In the background, the village of white houses and tile roofs can be seen, evoking a quiet life. ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1859 - 1940). "In the park". Oil on canvas. Signed and dedicated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 112 x 142 cm; 131 x 161 cm (frame). The gardens occupy a chapter apart in Meifrèn's painting, bequeathing us important oil paintings of the gardens of Aranjuez, but also patios and gardens of his different residences, especially in Majorca, as well as those of his friends. He developed fruitful variations on the theme, reaching the peak of his art in some of them, as is the case of the corner we are dealing with here. Meifrèn offers us a work exuberant with light and color, with an impressionistic treatment of the extensive park, of which we only see a fragment. The whole evokes a Mediterranean landscape, sunny and welcoming. A sensation of intimate and familiar space, a refuge of which the painting leaves testimony, inviting us to leisurely contemplation. A painter of landscapes and seascapes, Eliseo Meifrèn is considered one of the first introducers of the impressionist movement in Catalonia. • ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1857 - 1940). "River landscape". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower corner.
    Feb. 19, 2025

ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1857 - 1940). "River landscape". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower corner.

    Est: €3,000 - €3,500

ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1857 - 1940). "River landscape". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower corner. Measurements: 70 x 40 cm; 92 x 60 cm (frame). In this painting of great lyrical force, Eliseo Meifrén pays tribute to nature in its most humble and contemplative state. The vertical format gives prominence to a solitary and naked tree, rooted on the bank of a stream whose blue waters dialogue with the blue of the sky. The work immortalizes the fleeting moment of sunset with a pictorial treatment that balances realism with poetic sensibility, inviting introspection. His style has echoes of impressionism, especially in the way he captures the transitions of light and the textures of the landscape. The color palette reflects a change of season, with autumnal tones in the countryside and mauves of the sunset adding an emotional nuance. A disciple of Antonio Caba at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, after finishing his studies he spent some time in Paris, where he coincided with the public beginning of impressionism and became acquainted with "plen air" painting. He returned to Barcelona in 1879 and, that same year, he won the gold medal at the Regional Exhibition of Valencia. The following year he made his individual debut at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, where he continued to exhibit regularly from then on. He was part of the modernist group, and frequented Els Quatre Gats. Although he also dedicated himself to portraiture, Meifrèn was eminently a landscape and marine painter. He was one of the discoverers of the pictorial possibilities of Cadaqués, and he also used to paint Mallorcan landscapes (he was director of the School of Fine Arts in Palma). He made several trips in search of new landscapes, especially to France but also to the Canary Islands, Belgium, Italy and the United States. He held exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid (1881), Chicago (1893), Paris (1899), Brussels (1910), Santiago de Chile (1910), Buenos Aires (1910), Amsterdam (1912) and San Francisco (1915), among many other cities around the world. His style began with the detailed realism that dominated the Catalan school at the end of the 19th century, and gradually evolved towards impressionism, a language that would not be fully evident in his work until his last years. Throughout his career he won a multitude of awards, including the first medals at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid (1906) and Barcelona (1896), the Nonell prize in Barcelona (1935), the bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris (1888) and the grand prizes at the International Exhibitions of Buenos Aires (1910) and San Diego (1916). In 1952, the Barcelona City Council dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him, held at the Palacio de la Virreina. He is represented in the Museo del Prado, the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the MACBA in Barcelona and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, among many others.

ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1859 - 1940). "Cadaqués. 1936. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. With label of the Barcino gallery on the back. Measurements: 100 x 110 cm. The mythical town of Empordà was one of Meifrèn's favorite places. Throughout his life he repeated his visits to Cadaqués, and in spite of his successful itinerancies around the world, he never stopped having in mind the peaceful life licked by the Mediterranean. This painting belongs to a period of maturity, in which the mastery of light is remarkable, translating into accomplished cerulean glazes, in beautiful contrast with the line of whitewashed houses and the vibrant figures swarming along its margins, resolved with accurate touches, quick and sketchy strokes. The stormy and sunset sky is reflected on the mottled water, which gives an expressive and atmospheric quality to the coastal landscape, breaking with the idealized image of this beautiful place, going far beyond the friendly picturesqueness. The view of Cadaqués is ascribed to a treatment of light and color typical of late impressionism. The artist achieves a vibrant and evocative work that celebrates both the visual and emotional character of this coastal spot. A painter of landscapes and seascapes, Eliseo Meifrèn is considered one of the first introducers of the impressionist movement in Catalonia. He began his artistic training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Antonio Caba and Ramón Martí Alsina, with whom he began to create romantic landscapes of academic style. After finishing his studies, in 1878, he moved to Paris in order to broaden his artistic knowledge, and there he got to know first hand the painting "à plen air", which would influence him powerfully in his Parisian landscapes of those years. In 1890 he returned for the third time to the French capital, where he participated in the Salon des Beaux-Arts and in the Salon des Indépendants of 1892, together with Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol, artists with whom he had formed the Sitges pictorial group a year earlier. In the following years Meifrèn would send his works to numerous official exhibitions and competitions, among them the National Exhibitions of Madrid and Barcelona, and was awarded the third medal at the Paris Universal of 1889 and 1899, silver medal at the Brussels Universal of 1910, grand prize at the Buenos Aires Universal of the same year, medal of honor at the San Francisco International of 1915 and grand prize at the San Diego International of the following year.

ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1857 - 1940). "Surroundings of Manresa".1936-39. Oil on canvas. Signed. Measurements: 62 x 50 cm; 75 x 63 cm (frame). In his landscapes, Meifrén managed to suggest emotional states through a precise atmospheric capture. In this painting, the wide sky, favored by a low point of view, is covered with clouds laden with spring rain. The sky projects its silvery tones on the river. Trees with very long bare trunks grow on the riverbank, where a peasant woman walks with two sheep. In the distance, a farmhouse can be seen in the distance. Nature, with a chromatic symphony of emerald, glaucous and earthy greens, expresses itself, captured "a plein air" with a quick and free brushstroke. A disciple of Antonio Caba at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, after finishing his studies he spent some time in Paris, where he coincided with the public beginning of impressionism and became acquainted with "a plen air" painting. ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1857 - 1940). "Marina". Oil on panel. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. The frame in gilded wood has slight flaws. Measurements: 32 x 26 cm; 52 x 42 cm (frame). We see in this panel a peaceful scene starring the swell of an active sea, absolutely protagonist, which seems an echo of the ominous sky full of clouds. The composition is simple, avoiding anecdotal details that could break the atmosphere and the narrative, and the natural elements -the sea and the sky- are the absolute protagonists. After finishing his studies, in 1878, he moved to Paris in order to broaden his artistic knowledge, and there he got to know first hand the "plen air" painting, which would influence him powerfully in his Parisian landscapes of those years. Likewise, in Paris he coincided with the public beginning of impressionism. A year later he made a trip to Italy, during which he visited Naples, Florence, Venice and Rome; there he made contact with the circle of Catalan artists formed by Ramón Tusquets, Arcadio Mas i Fondevila, Enrique Serra, Antonio Fabrés and Joan Llimona, among others. That same year, 1879, he participated in the Regional Exhibition of Valencia, and won a gold medal. ELISEO MEIFRÈN ROIG (Barcelona, 1859 - 1940). "Cadaqués". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 37 x 44 cm; 60 x 67 cm (frame). The mythical town of the Empordà was one of Meifrèn's favorite places. Throughout his life he repeated his visits to Cadaqués, and in spite of his successful itinerancies around the world, he never stopped having in mind the peaceful life licked by the Mediterranean. This painting belongs to a period of maturity, in which the mastery of light is remarkable, resulting in successful verdigris glazes, in beautiful contrast to the line of whitewashed houses and vibrant figures swarming along its margins. A painter of landscapes and seascapes, Eliseo Meifrèn is considered one of the first introducers of the impressionist movement in Catalonia.
