      Yabu Meizan (Japanese, 1853-1934). Meiji era Japanese satsuma ceramic trumpet or ikebana vase, late 19th century. With enamel and gilt along the exterior depicting profuse millefleur floral motifs throughout, especially along the flared neck. The lower half of the stem portrays a seaside village landscape with a torii gate in the distance, and cartouches bearing figural village scenes and immortals revolve along the circumference of the flared footrim. Marked along the underside with a Yabu Meizan seal.

      YABU MEIZAN: A RARE SATSUMA CERAMIC DISH DEPICTING MONKEYS By Yabu Meizan (1853-1934), signed Yabu Meizan Japan, late 19th to early 20th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) The dish finely potted with squared corners, supported on a round base with flaring sides rising to straight rim. The interior decorated in fine enamels and gilding depicting a group of monkeys, several dressed in robes eating peaches and gourds, with a single monkey dressed as a priest, all enclosed in a border of blossoming flowers with fine gilt detailing. The sides are decorated with kiku (chrysanthemum) blossoms. Signed to the base within a gilt reserve YABU MEIZAN. DIMENSIONS 16.4 x 16.3 x 3 cm Condition: Very good condition with only very minor wear and rubbing to gilt. A few small glaze hairlines to the rim. Yabu Meizan (1853-1934) was a Japanese artist and workshop owner known for painting on porcelain. His studio produced high-end Satsuma ware and he was one of the artists who continued the tradition of high artistic quality while also successfully exporting. Meizan actively marketed his work internationally as well as domestically, taking an active role in organizing the presentation of Japanese wares at world fairs. The interior depicting a band of monkeys, some playing with one another, other pillaging a large basket laden with fruit, and others engaging in scholarly pursuits, all enclosed within wisteria branches suspending their blossoms. The exterior painted with fine floral blossoms. Signed to the base within a gilt reserve YABU MEIZAN. DIAMETER 13.2 cm Condition: Excellent condition with only very minor wear and rubbing to gilt. Yabu Meizan (1853-1934) was a Japanese artist and workshop owner known for painting on porcelain. The finely crackled beige body decorated in superb enamels and gilt with a royal procession, at its center a lady is being carried by four men inside a palanquin. The lady’s entourage comprising of samurai, banner carriers, a multitude of female and male attendees. The rim of the face is decorated with five panels enclosing millefleur designs. Etta May Gubbins married in 1909 at Kilmallock, Ireland to Captain Burston Beresford Gubbins (1876-1929), The 13th Hussars. May Gubbins, nee May Gibson, was the eldest of the three daughters of Edmund Gibson who was born at Quernmore Park, near Lancaster in 1824, went out to New Zealand with his brother Wilson and staked a claim to about 20,000 acres of land in South Island and died at Otago in 1886.

      YABU MEIZAN: A SUPERB AND LARGE SATSUMA VASE WITH SPARROW By Yabu Meizan (1853-1934), signed Yabu Meizan Japan, late 19th to early 20th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) The ovoid body rising from a recessed foot to an everted flat rim, finely enameled and gilt to the sides with a bird in an autumnal branch, the slightly rotten leaves are achieved with great naturalism and the complete image stands out beautifully against the pure ivory white crackled ground, the lip with a band of floral scroll. Signed to the base YABU MEIZAN within a gilt seal. HEIGHT 23.6 cm Condition: Two tiny, restored chips underneath the outer lip, otherwise excellent condition with minor wear to gilt. Provenance: From an important East German private collection, mainly assembled in the 1970s and 80s. Yabu Meizan (1853-1934) was a Japanese artist and workshop owner known for painting on porcelain. His studio produced high-end Satsuma ware and he was one of the artists who continued the tradition of high artistic quality while also successfully exporting. Meizan actively marketed his work internationally as well as domestically, taking an active role in organizing the presentation of Japanese wares at world fairs. Finely enameled and gilt to the sides with groups of figures engaged in various activities, including women preparing a feast, a woman grating bonito with a small white cat looking on, a group of women watching a dog perform tricks, as well as boys gathered around a samurai display, the neck with leafy chrysanthemum trailing over the shoulder, and the foot with two evenly spaced flowerheads flanked by leafy scrolls, all against a pure ivory white ground. Signed to the base YABU MEIZAN within a gilt seal. HEIGHT 12 cm Condition: Restored chip to the lip. Otherwise excellent condition.
