    OIl painting of "Ship Departing Coastline", attributed to Mary Blood Mellen (1819-1886) who studied under Fitz Hugh Lane (also called Fitz Henry Lane. Full rigged merchantman is showing with billowing sails, flying the American flag and blue owner's pennant. Vessel has passed by a pastoral shoreline with homes, a lighthouse and a church. Mounted into an elaborate old frame with heavily carved corners. 27 1/4" wide x 20 1/2" tall, overall.

Condition: Lined, trimmed from a larger composition, mild varnish inconsistencies, fine craquelure, mild surface grime. N.B. As an aspiring artist, Mary Blood Mellen was attracted to Fitz Henry Lane's work and was probably working in his Gloucester studio by 1848, where she began her apprenticeship making copies of Lane's work.(1) Mellen and Lane developed a close relationship and often worked collaboratively on the same canvas as well as side by side on their respective paintings. Mellen also painted many original works with considerable skill and often produced several versions of the same scene. This work is closely related to a painting Mellen produced in the 1850s titled Boats in Gloucester Harbor.(2) There are, however, some subtle differences between these works, namely the absence of the distant vessel (to the right of the rocks). 1. Publications: Michael Moses, "Mary Blood Mellen and Fitz Hugh Lane with a Check List of Paintings..." in The Magazine Antiques (volume CXL, number 5), November 1991, page 837. N.B. Mary Blood was born in Sterling, Massachusetts, in 1817. Following her marriage to Rev. Charles Mellen in 1840, the couple moved to Gloucester. By the end of that decade, Mellen found herself working alongside famed artist Fitz Hugh Lane, as his student and assistant. In recent years, scholars have discovered that the relationship between Lane and Mellen, which has often been presented as one of master artist and student, was really more than that. Although Mellen~dq~s style is clearly a derivative of Lane~dq~s, she actually completed several copies of his work, it is now believed that the Lane and Mellen relationship was really much more of a collaboration than was originally thought. In fact, scholars have noted that there are several canvases that without strong provenance to suggest that they were by Mellen, could have been easily ascribed to Lane himself.

Moses, "Mary Blood Mellen and Fitz Hugh Lane," "Antiques," Nov. 1991, pp. 826-837 Throughout her career, Mary Blood Mellen painted pictures inspired by Fitz Hugh Lane. Although she was influenced by Lane's compositions, technique and palette, Mellen interpreted the various sea and landscapes in her own unique style. Both artists received a number of commissions for a particular scene, giving Mellen the opportunity to explore a variety of compositions of a similar subject. This is the case with "Norman's Woe," one of three versions of this Gloucester seascape based on "The Western Shore with Norman's Woe" (Cape Ann Historical Association) by Lane. Mellen's work differs significantly from Lane's original: he concentrates on the calm waters of an inlet, while she focuses on the rocky shore line and crashing waves.
