Paul Meltsner (American, 1905-1966), "Boats at Dock", oil on canvas laid on board, signed lower left, 16 in. x 20 in., framed. Note: Born in New York City in 1905, Paul Meltsner was a painter and lithographer heavily involved with the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. He was known primarily for painting industrial and urban scenes common to the era and later for portraits of actors and performers who lived and worked in New York. The painting offered here invites the viewer to look past the masts of the ships at dock to the warehouses and buildings visible in the background. The height of the buildings suggest the New York skyline, a common subject in Meltsner’s work, while the impressionistic style of the boats and water intimate a tranquil scene in the midst of a bustling city.
