MADONNA MIT DEM KIND UND ZWEI ENGELN Öl auf Leinwand. 109,5 x 84 cm. Est: €2,000 - €3,000

From the property of the Grand Duchy of Hesse Anton Raffael Mengs Aussig 1728 - 1779 Rome, attributed Dream of St Joseph High quality workshop repetition of the painting of the same name in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (Gemäldegalerie, 124) Oil on canvas, relined 112 x 85 cm, with frame 124 x 97.5 cm Provenance: label and seal of the Grand Duchy of Hesse on the reverse ("Gr. Hss. Ministerium. Grosh. Hausses u. d. Äusseren", coat of arms of the state of Hesse) The immediate depiction shows the sleeping Joseph, who receives divine news in the form of an angel, namely that he is to go to Egypt with Mary and the baby Jesus to escape the threat of Herod. St. Joseph is sitting at his bench, one of his carpentry tools leaning against the table in front of him, the other still in his hand. With his right hand resting on the workbench, he has sunk into a deep sleep, his robe draped loosely over his body. Behind him, an angel appears as the transmitter of divine instruction, whose appearance is visible to the viewer but eludes Joseph's closed eyes. The angel with flowing hair, probably suggesting a sudden approach, has raised his left hand in front of his body in an inviting gesture, while his right hand points into the distance, presumably towards Egypt. The soft contours of the figures reveal elements of sfumato painting. The explicit frontality and clear conception of the picture's content show the departure from Baroque art and the turn towards Classicism, of which Anton Raphael Mengs was also a key pioneer. This painting is a high-quality workshop repetition of the painting in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (Gemäldegalerie 124). The provenance of the painting is also particularly noteworthy, as it comes from the Grand Duchy of Hesse, as evidenced by a label and seal on the reverse.

            A. MAURIN (1793-1860), Anton Raphael Mengs, Lithography

            Est: €1,350 - €1,800

Antoine Maurin (1793 Perpignan - 1860 Paris): Portrait of the painter Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779), , Lithography Technique: Lithography on Paper Inscription: Lower right signed in the printing plate: "Maurin". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Imp. lith. de Chabert, rue Cassette, No. 20. / Raphael Mengs.". Date: Description: The portrait of Anton Raphael Mengs drawn on stone by Antoine Maurin shows the painter with a penetrating gaze and delicately indicated wrinkles around his eyes and nose. It is easy to recognise the model for the lithograph in the artist's Berlin self-portrait, which was painted in the last years of his life, probably in 1778. The exhaustion of the court artist, who travelled widely between Dresden, Rome and Madrid and was extremely productive throughout his life, is effectively indicated in the portrait of himself. The portrait is considered to be one of the "most impressive and personal documents of self-representation ever", as it shows the unadorned traces of age as well as the mastery of technique achieved only through age and years of practice. The model for this lithograph is dated to the last years of Anton Raphael Mengs' life. It shows the artist at the age of around 50, after he had moved to Rome in 1777. Serious illnesses increasingly burdened him, but hardly kept him from working. Finally, the death of his wife in April 1778 took its toll on the artist's ailing mind and health. Sensitively captured by Maurin, the lithograph also reveals the artist's strength of character, the proud demeanour of the sought-after court artist and, last but not least, his clear, observant gaze. Framed The painting depicts the Irish Trinitarian Father John Gahagan, died in Naples in 1774, who was a prominent figure in the convent of Trinitarian in Via dei Condotti in Rome. The friar agreed to be portrayed by Mengs on the condition that the painter did not depict him in cassock clothing. There are at least three other portraits of the prelate: in particular, the close compositional affinity of our canvas with the painting formerly in the Drey collection in Munich should be noted (see S. ANTON RAPHAEL MENGS (Bohemia 1728–1779 Rome) Maria Antonia Walpurgis Symphorosa of Bavaria, Electress Princess of Saxony (1724–1780). Oil on canvas. 54.2 × 42.7 cm. Gutachten: Prof. Dr Steffi Roettgen, 20.1.2024. Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland. --------------- ANTON RAPHAEL MENGS (Böhmen 1728–1779 Rom) Maria Antonia Walpurgis Symphorosa von Bayern, Kurprinzessin von Sachsen (1724–1780). Öl auf Leinwand. 54,2 × 42,7 cm. Gutachten: Prof. Dr. Steffi Roettgen, 20.1.2024. Provenienz: Schweizer Privatbesitz. ---------------

Anton Raphael Mengs exerted a great influence on Spanish art and his mark can be seen in the production of several painters from the court circle such as: Francisco Bayeu, Mariano Salvador Maella or Francisco de Goya himself. He was at the service of Charles III from 1761 until his death in 1779 and as the first painter from October 22, 1766. His presence in Spain took place in two stages: a first between September 1761 and November 1769 and a second in July from 1774 to January 1777. The panel presented here is formally related to one of his most emblematic works: The Lamentation over the Dead Christ (National Heritage, inv. number 10084136), executed in the last two years of his first stay in Spain; a painting that was part of a cycle made by the artist for the decoration of the bedroom of Charles III in the Royal Palace of Madrid. As can be seen by comparing the two works, this Mater Dolorosa, which in the past belonged to the collection of Don Antonio de la Cuadra, precisely follows the same model as that of the Virgin of Lamentation. It shows Mary represented as a bust with a gesture torn by her pain, her face reddened and full of tears, directing her gaze to heaven with a clear interpellation attitude. She wears a white cap and carries an ocher scarf that frames her face and neck, wearing a grayish tunic that appears covered by the splendid blue cloak. As Hornisch pointed out, this painting must be the same one that, according to Azara's testimony, belonged to the collection of Don Antonio de la Cuadra, general director of the Post Office, who commissioned Mengs himself to execute it. According to Azara, the wooden panel had an oval frame and had dimensions of two feet and a finger high by a foot and a half wide; measurements that coincide exactly with those of this work. Sadly, its original frame was lost in the mid-20th century at the time it changed ownership. The composition of this Mater Dolorosa by Mengs enjoyed great success and proof of this is that the engraver Fernando Selma (Valencia, 1752 - Madrid, 1810) took the model to take it for printing, although in said work no reference is made to the author of the original painting, since only the inscription appears: “Fernando Selma drew and engraved it.” The engraver Jose Gomez de Navia (San Idelfonso, Segovia, 1757 - Madrid, ca. 1803) made a similar version, according to the design made by Jose Lopez Enguidanos, inspired by the original painting. Mengs also painted a second version of this Dolorosa for the architect Francesco Sabatini, but smaller, 30 x 30 cm, and with a quadrangular format. Honisch identified Sabatini's painting with one located in the Royal Academy of History in Madrid and which is also a partial replica of the model that appears represented in the Lamentation of the Royal Palace of Madrid. Measurements: 61 x 48 cm.

Circle of ANTON RAPHAEL MENGS (Aussig, Bohemia, 1728-Rome, 1779). "Saint John the Baptist. Oil on canvas. Re-tinted. It presents restorations. Size: 28,5 x 35,5 cm; 39 x 49 cm (frame). The work we are dealing with closely follows the aesthetic precepts developed by Mengs, Charles III's first chamber painter whose art enjoyed great acceptance at the court. Thus, we are faced with a Saint John the Baptist with soft, delicate features, notable for his naturalness. Despite the fact that he is depicted beardless, when he usually has long, shaggy beards, there are various attributes that allow us to identify the figure as Saint John the Baptist: firstly, the figure points with his right hand to a broad staff, topped in the form of a cross, covered by a phylactery. Secondly, although it is not visible in this composition, the phylactery should read "Agnus dei ...", a reference to the phrase "This is the Lamb of God who cleanses the sin of the world". The lamb, a symbol of Christ and his sacrifice on behalf of mankind, a customary attribute of St John the Baptist, is not found in this work. The artist was probably inspired by classical images of the "Good Shepherd", bucolic figures of young shepherds tending their flocks that were adopted in early Christianity as symbolic figures of Jesus caring for his faithful. This inspiration from classical sources may explain the youthful, beardless appearance of Saint John. A painter and theorist of Neoclassicism, Anton Raphael Mengs was trained in both the practical aspects of painting and the theory of art under the influence of Winckelmann, whose friend and outstanding pupil he was. He trained in Dresden under his father, Ismael Mengs, a court painter. Later, between 7141 and 1744, he travelled to Rome to further his training with Marco Benefial, studying in particular ancient sculpture and the paintings of Raphael and the 17th-century classicists. In 1744 he returned to Dresden and was appointed court painter, where he devoted himself chiefly to portraiture. In 1746 he was appointed painter to King Augustus III of Poland and subsequently undertook a tour of Italy, ending in Rome, where he settled permanently. In the Italian capital he executed important religious and mythological works in fresco, displaying a mature, clearly neoclassical style influenced by the Renaissance and, more specifically, by the work of Raphael. In 1761 he was recalled to Spain, where he remained until 1769 as the first painter to King Charles III. For him he painted works to decorate the Royal Palace and the Aranjuez Palace, as well as important portraits. His presence in Madrid definitively pushed Tiepolo into a corner, as Mengs represented a new taste that was widely accepted at court. Although he later returned to Rome, he visited the Spanish court again between 1774 and 1776, shortly before contracting the illness that led to his death in Italy in 1779. Works by Mengs are now in the Museo del Prado, the Louvre in Paris, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, the Metropolitan in New York, the National Gallery and the Royal Collection in London, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Albertina in Vienna and other leading art galleries in Europe and the United States.

Mengs, Anton Raphael (1728 Aussig - 1779 Paris) Kopie nach Bildnis Kurprinz Friedrich Christian von Sachsen (1722-1763). Öl auf Leinwand, spätes 19. / frühes 20. Jh. Mitte rechts signiert ''H Kluge''. Portrait of Prince Elector Friedrich Christian of Saxony (1722-63). Copy after Mengs. Oil on canvas, late 19th / early 20th century. Signed middle right ''H Kluge''. Backside with remarks on motif, stretcher with signature. Framed. Painted in Old Master's style. Canvas relined, some few small retouches. High quality copy after the pastel drawing in the Old Master's collection Dresden.
