Frans Menton - Story of Lot in four plates - 1585(4)

A complete series of four prints by the Flemish painter and engraver Frans Menton who was probably educated in Floris studio and later moved to Alkmaar mainly as a painter. Subjects: HOSPITALITAS Lot seen to right, welcoming a pair of angels into his house; in the background, the three seen walking past the gates of Sodoma, seen to left. --- MISERICORDIA/ Lot and his two daughters escaping Sodom and Gomorrah accompanied by two angels; behind Lot's wife, turned into a salt statue, looking towards the city in flames. ---- EBRIETAS: Lot seated by a cave with one of his daughters seated on his lap and the other pouring him wine to get him drunk; behind, Sodoma and Gomorrah in flames. ----- INCESTUS: Lot seen to left, preventing a group of Sodomites from entering his house and attack the angels, one seen to left, near the door; behind, a view of the city of Sodom.

Frans Menton - (ca. 1550 – ca. 1615, Alkmaar) - The Four Elements - After Frans Floris. Four engravings, 15.7 x 23 cm. The New Hollstein (Floris) 111–114. Here the complete set of four plates engraved by Frans Menton (born Alkmaar) during the time he was apprentice of Hieronymus Cock in Antwerp. The designs are by Frans Floris and they were published by Hieronymus Cock. On Ignis we find in the plate the inscriptions: ' F.Floris Inventor', 'H. Cock. excud 1568', and the 'F.M'. monogram of Menton on the stone in the bottom right corner. This is a very rare set from one of the most interesting periods in Antwerp's print history.

Die vier Elemente. -- 4 Kupferstiche, jeweils zwei auf einem Bogen gedruckt, nach Frans Floris. Je ca. 15,2 x 23 cm. 1568. Wouk (New Hollstein, Floris) 111-114. -- -- Über den Maler und Kupferstecher Frans Menton ist nur wenig bekannt. Laut Karel van Mander, der den Künstler persönlich gekannt hat, ging er in jugendlichem Alter in Antwerpen bei Frans Floris in die Lehre. Seit 1580 lebte und arbeitete Menton in seiner Geburtsstadt Alkmaar in den nördlichen Niederlanden. Er soll hier vor allem als Bildnismaler tätig gewesen sein, jedoch sind keine Porträts seiner Hand überliefert. Die vorliegende, seltene Folge nach Vorlagen Frans Floris' erschien im Verlag von Hieronymus Cock und trägt dessen Adresse sowie das Datum 1568. Es handelt sich um eine frühe, während der Antwerpener Studienzeit Mentons entstandene Arbeit. Floris selbst wurde offenbar bei der Arbeit an den Vorlagen von anderen Künstlern inspiriert. C. van de Velde hat darauf verwiesen, dass die Darstellung des Wassers starke kompositorische Ähnlichkeiten mit einer etwa gleichformatigen Radierung Leon Davents nach einer Zeichnung Primaticcios aufweist ("Eine Nymphe betrachtet einen entfliehenden Reiher", Zerner L.D. 37). -- Prachtvolle, gegensatzreiche Drucke mit breitem Rand. Vornehmlich im weißen Rand geringfügig fleckig, teils zarte horizontale Quetschspuren, jeweils winziger Wurmgang, aufgezogen, Spuren von Rotschnitt und ein Blatt mit Montierungsresten oben, sonst einheitlich und sehr schön erhalten. -- -- - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Complete series of 4 prints representing the story of Lot and his daughters. First edition supposedly published by Hieronymus Cock. For the later second edition by Gerard de Jode in 1579 the copperplates were entirely reworked and the work was attributed to Hans Collaert. Ref. Hollstein XIV: 1-4.

Heawood 857: Den Haag 1599). Hinsichtlich des Monogramms vgl. Hollstein, Bd. XIII, S. 35. Ganz ausgezeichneter, in den Schatten schön kräftiger Druck auf die Einfassungslinie geschnitten, unten mit dem Schriftrand. Leicht fleckig, oben rechts kleiner hinterlegter Randeinriss, weitere geringfügige Gebrauchsspuren, sonst in guter Erhaltung.
