Gaetano MEO (1850-1925), Oil on panel, 'Olive Pool near Castello svevo Lucera Italy, Inscribed & dated 1908 on old exhibition labels to verso, Signed, 13.5" x 19.25" (34.3cm x 48.9cm), Note: Gaetano Giuseppe Alfonso Faustino Meo was an artist model and painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. Born in Italy, as a child he and his brother were assigned to a circus and toured as musicians. They ran away, first to Paris and then to London where still less than 18 years old he met & married an Agnes Morton. In 1867 the artist Simeon Solomon invited him to model for a painting. His handsome looks led him to other modeling jobs including the studio of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Blake Richmond, Lord Leighton, George Hemming Mason, Ford Maddox Brown, Edward Burne-Jones & Lawrence Alma Tadema & others. Meo established a lifelong friendship with William Blake Richmond & worked in his studio, both as a model & assistant. As a model, Meo is represented in many of these famous artists’ paintings. Under Richmond’s tuition, Meo became a proficient landscape painter and exhibited at the Royal Academy and his work is strongly influenced by Mason & Leighton. He also learnt to draw cartoons for stained glass & worked on mosaics both in St Paul’s Cathedral & St Andrew’s Chapel in Westminster’s Cathedral. He became a British subject in 1886 & Henry Holiday threw a party at Hampstead which was attended by many of the artistic community along with aristocrats including the Duke of Devonshire, paying tribute to the high esteem in which Meo was held.
