    MAP, Asia, Mercator

    Est: $800 - $950

Asia. Gerard Mercator, Asia ex Magna Orbis Terre Descriptione Gerardi Mercatoris Desumpta Studio et Industria..., from Gerardi Mercatoris - Atlas sive Cosmographicae, 1630 (circa). Hand Color. Derived from the elder Mercator’s world map of 1569, this map of Asia was engraved by his grandson. The coasts of Northeast Asia and Northwest North America are separated by Gastaldi's fabled Strait of Anian. South of this strait a beautifully engraved galleon gives speculation to the possibility of a northern route to Asia. Sumatra has a curiously archaic outline, while the relationship between New Guinea and Terra Australis is left to the viewer's imagination. The place names, Beach, Regio, Lucach and Maletur are all taken from Marco Polo's account, but erroneously ascribed to locations in the vicinity of present-day Australia. Latin text on verso. LITERATURE: Yeo #13; Parry #3.13; Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #8000:1A.

Mercator & Hondius, pub. 1623 - Map of Barbary, Africa

    Est: $500 - $1,500

This exceptional folio map is from Gerard Mercator's Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi... The work was published in Amsterdam by Henri Hondius in 1623. Mercator's Atlas was the first true “atlas”, a word chosen by Mercator himself to refer to a collection of maps which would be adopted by all later geographers. Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) is one of the most famous cartographers. He created the Mercator projection for maps which had all parallels and meridians drawn at right angles to each other. This proved exceptionally useful to sailors allowing them to much more easily navigate. Mercator also introduced the term of "atlas", first used to describe his collection of maps gathered into one volume. Mercator is certainly best known for his maps and projections. Mercator was one the greatest names in early cartography, with his friend, Abraham Ortelius, describing Mercator as being the “contemporary Ptolemy”. “Contrary to the maps in Abraham Ortelius’s Theatrum orbis terrarium, Antwerp 1570, Mercator’s maps are original. Abraham Ortelius did what most of the atlas-makers of our time are engaged in: the reduction and generalisation of already existing maps. Gerard Mercator, with his sense of scientific word (which should be original and new) checked the current knowledge of the configuration of the earth’s topography against its fundamental sources and drew new maps in his original conception. This method of map-making took more time than it would have by mere copying. But he had not the intention to compete with Ortelius’s best-selling atlas.” (Koeman)

Copper engr., 29 x 52 cm (sl. browned, two cracks in pl. across the top box). - Extremely rare double hemisphere map by Rumold Mercator, based upon Gerard Mercator’s celebrated 1569 world map and published during his lifetime (1512-1594). Although the map is a reduced version of the 1569 wall map it does not show the revolutionary Mercator Projection. From 1620 onwards, the cracks in the plate had extended almost completely across the top box containing the title, as evident on this copy. - Ref. Van der Krogt I [0001:1A]. - Shirley 157. - Watelet 379. - Karrow 56/17.10.
