    MERCHI, G. (Gaetano Merchi, Brescia 1747-1829 Paris), Werkstatt, sign. MERCHI F. Büste der Madame Marie Madelaine Guimard (1743 Paris 1816). Stein vollplastisch gehauen und patiniert 'en fausse terre-cuite'. Büste mit hochgestecktem Haar und rundem 'Bleu Turquin'-Sockel. Auf kanneliertem Säulenschaft 'en faux marbre' mit Quaderfuss. Wenige Bestossungen. H Büste 68 cm. H Säule 106 cm. Provenienz: Aus einer französischen Sammlung. M.M. Guimard war die wohl bedeutendste Schauspielerin und Tänzerin der Louis-XVI-Epoche. 1758 begann sie ihre Tanzkarriere an der Comédie Française und sorgte mit ihrem beeindruckenden Talent und dem koketten, ausdrucksstarken Tanz für Furore. Drei Jahre später wurde sie in der Académie Royale de Musique aufgenommen. Vor allem ihre Auftritte in der Opéra begeisterten das Publikum, sie durfte sogar bei Louis XVI persönlich vortanzen. Guimard hatte zahlreiche Liebessffären, wie z. B. mit mit J.B. de Laborde, dem 'Premier valet de chambre ordinaire du Roi', dem sie 1763 ein Kind gebar. Dank ihres Erfolges und der stattlichen Pension konnte sie sich einen sehr aufwendigen Lebensstil leisten. Sie empfing zahlreiche bedeutende Persönlichkeiten im Salon ihres Pariser Hôtels 'Temple de Terpsichore'. 1789 zog sie sich von der Bühne zurück und heiratete kurz darauf den Tänzer und Chansonnier H.E. Desoréaux. G. Merchi verliess Brescia 1773 und zog nach Paris, wo er mehrere Büsten von Opernsängerinnen, Schauspielerinnen und bekannten Adligen schuf. Eine Portraitbüste von Fragonard (1732-1806) steht heute im Pariser Louvre (Inv. Nr. RF.1974.1). Zwei Terracottabüsten der Madame Guimard befinden sich in den Sammlungen des Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, eine dritte wurde bei Christies' s London am 29.6.1972 (Katalognr. 21) verkauft.
