        Description: Louisa Ann Meredith (Australia, 1812-1895), Tiger Lily, 1839, Watercolor, signed and dated lower right, watercolor illustration of a tiger lily, matted and in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 15 1/8 in. x 11 1/8 in. Louisa Anne Meredith was a published author, poet, botanist and artist. After her family moved from Birmingham to Tasmania, she wrote extensively about her new home. Her wildflower drawings won medals in exhibitions in Australia and overseas, including at the Melbourne Exhibition of 1866. Her published works documented both daily life in the colony and the flora and fauna of the island. Measurements: Height: by sight, 9 5/8 in. x Width: 5 5/8 in. Condition: Overall good condition, foxing, mat burn, not viewed out of frame, light wear to frame. Folio, with 13 chromolithographed plates including additional title, and text illustrations; nineteenth-century half plum morocco, spine fully gilt, gilt edges, by Walch & Sons, Hobart. Foxing, affecting several plates. A handsomely bound copy, with an appealing provenance: with the John Shirlow bookplate of Robert Sticht, renowned metallurgist and bibliophile, and inscribed by him to his wife Marion at Queenstown in 1895.

When Bush Friends in Tasmania (first series) was published in 1860, her illustrations of Tasmanian wildflowers attracted particular attention. This was a sumptuous folio volume with cover design & lettered titles by her friend, Edward La Trobe Bateman. (The second series, an equally beautiful folio volume, was published in 1891).
