After several years of studying fine art, he began a three year period working as apprentice with master illustrator, Dean Cornwell which shaped both his style and his thinking. Later, Merfeld began teaching art at his Brookwood Gallery and Atelier. He painted, taught and showed his work in Westcliffe, CO.
