  • Signed / Framed G. Merfeld Painting of Owl, 1979
    Jul. 23, 2020

Signed / Framed G. Merfeld Painting of Owl, 1979

    Est: $600 - $900

Gerald Lydon Merfeld (American, b. 1936). "Short-Eared Owl" Signed "Merfeld" on lower right. A large painting of a handsome owl perched upon a tree branch by American artist Gerald Merfeld. Merfeld's rendering of the bird of prey is impressively realistic - with meticulously delineated plumage of warm brown and beige hues with fringes - a feature that helps to muffle sound when they fly - and golden eyes; it seems as if the owl is truly in the viewer's midst. The owl is known as the bird of Athena, the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, and owls of course became symbols of intelligence thought to have the power to presage events. Owls are also admired for their impressive hunting skills - their huge eyes able to spot prey up to half a mile away thanks to their binocular vision - and let's not forget their remarkable ability to turn their heads 270 degrees! A striking painting, perfect for anyone who adores this fascinating raptor, set in a custom wood frame. Size: 24.125" L x 15.875" W (61.3 cm x 40.3 cm); 30.5" L x 22.625" W (77.5 cm x 57.5 cm) framed. Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection; ex Trailside Galleries, Scottsdale, Arizona, USA All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #149451
