    Oil on paper, laid down on canvas Russia, 2nd half of the 19th century Arseniy Ivanovich Meshchersky (1834-1902) – Russian painter and professor of the art academy in St Petersburg Signed in Cyrillic ‘A. ?????????’ lower left in red With scratched inscription (illegible) lower right (by another hand?) Sheet dimensions: 37.7 x 50.3 cm; dimensions of the stretcher: 37.4 x 51.3 cm In gilt frame: 47.5 x 61 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Denmark Study several boulders in sunshine, which are partly overgrown with various plants. Condition: The oil study, executed on paper, is laid down on canvas and overall faintly wavy. The sheet bears several pin holes in the corners and scattered pinholes at the edges. There are small paper losses in the corners and a tiny and unobtrusive paint loss in the image area lower center. The sheet is heavily varnished with the varnish being removed in the lower right area. There touch-ups are visible under UV-light. The overall condition is good, consistent with age. The frame’s corners are somewhat battered, otherwise the condition is good. The sheet of the oil study measures 37.7 x 50.3 cm, the stretcher 37.4 x 51.3 cm. The framed dimensions are 47.5 x 61 cm. Arseniy Ivanovich Meshchersky (1834-1902) Meshchersky studied at the art academy in St. Petersburg from 1854 to 1857, when his artistic talent was already honored with first awards. In 1857 he spent two years in Switzerland to deepen his artistic training under Alexandre Calame (1810-1864). From 1859 he frequently travelled through Europe, sometimes for more than one year. In 1867 he was even asked to accompany the Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich on his world tour. Meshchersky was finally appointed professor of the art academy in St. Petersburg.
