§ ATTRIBUTED TO PAUL AYSHFORD METHUEN (BRITISH, 1886-1974) ATTRIBUTED TO PAUL AYSHFORD METHUEN (BRITISH, 1886-1974) Kitchen Bridge, Cambridge initialled 'M' (lower right) oil on panel 29.8 x 39.9 cm (11 3/4 x 15 7/8 in.) Kitchen Bridge, also known as Wren Bridge, is the second oldest surviving bridge over the river Cam, Cambridge. The bridge was designed by Sir Christopher Wren (1632 - 1723) and built by Robert Grumbold between 1709 - 1711. The unusual name for the bridge derives from the fact that, when the New Court building was completed in 1825, it had a dining hall but no kitchens. At meal times, food for the students continued to be prepared in the Old Court Kitchens and carried across the Kitchen Bridge.

Note: Paul Ayshford Methuen met Clifford and Rosemary Ellis shortly after their arrival in Bath in 1936 through the Bath Society of Artists. He believed that Corsham Court with its important art collection and historically important house and grounds, designed by Lancelot Capability Brown, offered the teachers and students at Bath Academy of Art a unique environment for their studies. Methuen himself had studied at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford and, in 1927, had attended drawing classes with Walter Sickert which had a profound impact on work. He is known mostly as a painter of urban views and outdoor views, many of which contain examples of the many interesting plants grown at Corsham Court.
