    The works of the Czech German Franz Metzner are mostly associated with architecture. Metzner participated in the decoration of a number of important buildings in Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic, the most famous work is probably the decoration of the Stoclet Palace in Brussels. The pair of sculptures made of glazed ceramics belong to the peak period of this important sculptor. The sculptures were made at the Vocational School of Ceramics in Teplice, published in the exhibition catalog: Franz Metzner, Ein Bildhauer der Jahrhundertwende in Berlin - Wien - Prag - Leipzig, 1977, p. 116 „Die Frierende, I.“ and „Die Frierende, II. “.     Around 1913; Germany 39 cm (h) A native of Bohemia, in the early 20th century he was an important exponent of the Wiener Secession. In 1903–1906 and 1909 he was a professor at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. His principal works are primary associated with architecture, and he was involved in decorating the Stoclet Palace in Brussels. Metzner’s most important work is the interior decoration for the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig. In Bohemia he mainly worked in Liberec, Jablonec nad Nisou, Teplice and Prague. The Madonna here is from the artist’s later oeuvre, which is typified by smooth S-shapes. From the Prague-based collection of Bohuslav Dusek.     FRANZ METZNER (1870-1919) MADONNA Around 1913, Germany Czech-born Metzner was one of Vienna's significant exponents of Art Nouveau at the beginning of the 20th century and also taught at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. His most significant works are connected mostly with architecture. Among other things, he worked on the decoration of the Stoclet Palace in Brussels. This Madonna is one of the author's later works.
