Matted and framed. "At the opposite pole from Art Nouveau exuberance, Henri Meunier was an artist of exceptional purity. He took his colors in flat tints and his thick outlines from Japanese prints to construct strong and clear images" (Weill p. 60). "In 1898 the illustrated postcard was twenty-nine years old and was entering into its golden age. Wide availability, international acceptance, and cheap postage for cards made them immensely popular; in 1899 in Belgium 12 million cards were printed for a population of 6.2 million; in England, 14 million were printed for a population of 38.5 million. Nummer 7, November 1897, gedruckt von F. Champenois, Paris, 34,5x23cm (Abb.), 66,5x49cm (Rahmen), PP, R *Meunier erhielt den ersten Kunstunterricht in der Gravurwerkstatt seines Vaters. Danach studierte er an der Schule für angewandte Kunst in Ixelles, wo sein Vater Naturzeichnen unterrichtete. Meuniers Schaffen war vom Jugendstil und japanischer Kunst beeinflusst, dabei zeigte er eine Neigung zum Monumentalismus. Seit 1895 schuf er Plakate, entwarf Buchumschläge, Briefmarken und Spielkarten. Auf der Kunstausstellung in Limoges erhielt er eine Goldmedaille. Er beschäftigte sich auch mit der Lithografie und der Radierung.*

[with] compositions that are gravely meditative, clean and synthetic. The artist’s interest focused on bringing out opposing light and dark values within his often large, contained, flowing masses of color to support the force and veracity of his concepts” (Belle Epoque 1970, p. 68). This design for Rajah coffee is a classic of Belgian Art Nouveau poster art; it was called Meunier’s “best work” and “a masterpiece” by L’Estampe et L’Affiche in 1898 (p. 227).
