          Est: €2,000 - €3,000

MEYERHOLD VSEVOLOD: (1874-1940) Russian Theatre Director and Actor. Best known for his provocative experimental works and symbolism in an unconventional theatre. Creator of the acting system called biomechanics. Meyerhold was arrested, tortured and executed after a forced confession during the Great Purge. A rare and excellent A.L.S., `V. Meyerhold´, in Cyrillic, two pages, folio, Hendaye, France, 26th July 1930, to Vladimir Lvovich, in Cyrillic. Meyerhold on a lengthy letter first refers to a scrapbook stating in part `Argus de la Presse is a robbery. I beg you to refrain from ordering the scrapbook from them. I am sorry to bother you with this matter. But you will surely agree that….this book is too expensive (600 fr). When I will be in Moscow, I will try to get to an agreement with the museum and convince them to order a full scrapbook. Being objective, maybe it is not that expensive, taking into account that the compilation must be done post factum. But as I have not received money yet from Moscow, I cannot afford such costs.´ Meyerhold further refers to his visa permits and his stay in France, and states in part `When you and I were at the Police Prefecture, myself and Zinaida Nikolaevna made a petition to the Minister in order to extend the visa for two more months. But at the Secretariat of Isnard, we were only given papers (Récépissé de demande de carte d'identité) that are valid only until the 7th of August… The day we had left Paris, we received a notification to go to the office of Le Chef du Service des Étrangers… When we received our Récépissé at the Secretariat of Isnard (7-7-1930), we were given a right to stay in France, so we went to Hendaye-Plage, basing on what the Secretary had said, that we should come to the Prefecture on the 7th August 1930.´ Meyerhold tries to extend his stay in France, further saying `Could it be possible, dear, Vladimir Lvovich, not to leave the Hendaye-Plage harbour before the 11th August (expiry date for our aller et retour railway tickets). I enclose a piece of paper with our signatures and ask you to submit a petition for extension of stay to the Secretary of Isnard… Greetings from Zin[aida] Nik[olaevna].´ Meyerhold concludes his letter adding last sentences to the borders. VG Zinaida Nikolaevna Reich (1894-1939) Russian Actress. One of the main figures of the Meyerhold Theatre. First married to Russian poet Sergey Yesenin. She married after divorce Vsevolod Meyerhold in 1922. Zinaida Reich died after being brutally stabbed in her apartment by NKVD agents.

MEYERHOLD, Sketch for Mayakovsky's play Banya [Bath], 1930

          Est: $500 - $700

MEYERHOLD VSEVOLOD EMILEVICH (RUSSIAN 1874-1940), Sketch for Mayakovsky's play Banya [Bath], 1930, pencil on paper, 34.5 x 20.5 cm (13 5/8 x 8 in.), inscribed and dated lower right by Aleksander Fevralsky, a pupil of Meyerhold and a member of the Meyerhold Theatre LOT NOTES Meyerhold was a prominent Russian and Soviet theatre director, actor and theatrical producer. Thanks to his provocative symbolic experiments on stage, he became known as one of the most influential theatrical figures of all times. He began his career at the Moscow Art Theater, and then, in 1920, opened his own theater, which was named in his honor. Meyerhold was a close friend of Mayakovsky and often staged his productions. This drawing was also created for the aim of staging one of Mayakovsky's plays that took place at the Meyerhold Theater. The drawing comes from the archives of a student and subsequently a biographer of Meyerhold, Aleksander Fevralsky. In view of Meyerhold's short life, his drawings are extremely rare. The Meyerhold Theater did not satisfy the Soviet leader Stalin, after what Meyerhold was shot in 1940. PROVENANCE INFORMATION This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Meyerhold, influential Russian actor and director who was murdered by Stalin, rare autograph note signed

          Est: $1,500 - $1,800

Very Rare Letter by the Great Russian Theater Director ********* MEYERHOLD, VSEVOLOD. (1874-1940). Influential Russian actor, director and impresario. ANS. (“Vs. Meyerhold” and “VM”). 1p. 4to. November 1925, Moscow. On the letterhead of the People’s Department of Education Vs. Meyerhold State Theatre. To Comrade Miachina. In Russian with translation. Meyerhold has crossed out a section of a typed letter and written in black ink across the text: ********* “To: Com[rade] Miachina, retype and could you stop forcing me to sign the recommendation of actor Somov created by who knows whom. It is too premature to recommend him since I don’t know him well enough. Vs. Meyerhold. And his ‘importance’ is not obvious. Vs.M.” ********* The typed letter to which Meyerhold is responding declares: ********* “To: CHIEF OF THE 6th POLICE PRECINCT OF THE CITY OF MOSCOW The actor of Meyerhold State Theatre com[rade] Somov V.V. has a residency permit at Vakhtangov Street #13, Apt. 7, in Moscow until November 25th of this year. Com. Somov is a very important member for the production. The administration of the theatre is highly interested in his permanent residency in Moscow. [Crossed out by Meyerhold] I am asking to provide assistance in obtaining his extended residency permit. Director of the theatre, People’s Artist of the Republic: /Vs. Meyerhold/” ********* After abandoning his law studies, Meyerhold became a pupil of Moscow Art Theater founder Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko and method acting pioneer Konstantin Stanislavsky. He starred in numerous important theatrical productions between 1898 and 1902, when he began to direct as well as act, eventually moving from realist drama to more experimental works many of which were staged in St. Petersburg’s great imperial theaters. ********* Although his productions were popular, government officials pressured Meyerhold to return to conventional, realistic productions, leading him to embrace the 1917 Revolution which, initially, freed him from the old regime’s artistic constraints. “Meyerhold was deeply inspired by the revolution and several weeks after the Bolsheviks came to power arrived at the Bolshevik headquarters in Smolny, and declared he was ready to cooperate with the new government. He joined the Communist party [and] headed the theater department of the People’s Education Commissariat… Meyerhold’s ideas were becoming more and more radical. He kept experimenting: he wanted to abolish the acting profession and to let the common people participate in plays; he wanted to give free theater tickets to workers and peasants; he wanted to change all the names of the USSR theaters to the abbreviation ‘RSFSR’: ‘RSFSR-1’ (‘Russian Soviet Federated Socialistic Republic 1’), and ‘RSFSR-2’, and so on. In a year, The People’s Commissar of Culture removed him from the department. In 1920, Meyerhold founded a theater named ‘RSFSR-1’ to use as his own laboratory. This theater changed names many times, until in 1926 it finally became the State Meyerhold Theater,” (“Prominent Russians: Vsevolod Meyerhold,” Russiapedia). It is on this letterhead, the People’s Department of Education Vs. Meyerhold State Theatre, that Meyerhold has written our note. ********* Despite his commitment to the party, his artistic ideas and avant-garde productions earned him increasing criticism from party officials and Meyerhold soon earned scorn for his opposition to Socialist realism, a style which promoted communist values and was endorsed by Joseph Stalin himself. In the 1930s, Stalin banned avant-garde art and Meyerhold’s plays were censored or banned outright. The theater was shut down completely in 1938. The following year, Meyerhold’s wife was found murdered and, later, he was arrested and tortured into confessing to espionage. He was executed by a firing squad in 1940 as part of Stalin’s purge of his political opponents. During the de-Stalinization of the 1950s, Meyerhold was posthumously cleared of the charges against him. ********* With some nominal wear and in very good condition. Extremely rare.
