    1960-1970. Canvas. oil. 161x114 cm. Leo Michelson. 1887–1978 An artist. whose works cover a variety of periods and styles and who has always been open to trying out new techniques in his works. The 1917 Russian Revolution forced Michelson to move to Munich. Germany. where he contributed to the origins of German Expressionism. Michelson continuously refined his talent through learning and went nowhere without his crayons in order not to miss a single stroke of inspiration. Art historians compare Leo Michelson with the famous modernist Marc Chagall and the renowned master of cubism. Pablo Picasso. The artist was born in Riga. He learned his craft in Saint Petersburg and Tartu. The 1917 Russian Revolution forced Michelson to move to Munich. Germany. where he contributed to the origins of German Expressionism. Later. the artist moved to Paris. where he gained international acclaim with his paintings. etchings and sculptures. In 1938. Riga City Art Museum held Leo Michelson’s solo exhibition. The renowned artist’s works have been featured in the largest art exhibitions in Western Europe. the Soviet Union and the USA. Due to World War II and the German invasion of Paris. the painter fled to New York where he lived for the rest of his life. During his creative lifetime. the artist painted more than 1000 pieces of artwork. In honour of her husband. in 1985 Leo Michelson’s widow opened the Michelson Museum of Art in Marshall. Texas.
