Carl Milles Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, b. 1875 - d. 1955

(born Lagga, Sweden 23 June 1875; died Lidingo, Sweden 1955) Swedish sculptor. After graduating from a technical college where he studied woodwork, carving, and modeling in Stockholm, in 1897 Carl Milles moved to Paris and remained there until 1904. While in Paris he studied at the Academie Colarossi and took on various jobs, including working as Rodin’s assistant. He received notable acclaim throughout Sweden when in 1902 he won a competition to design a memorial for the Swedish regent Sten Sture in Upsala. After living in Munich, Rome, Stockholm, and Austria where he further developed his style from 1904-06, Milles settled in Lidingo, Sweden and became a professor of modeling at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm. In 1930 he moved to the United States where he produced numerous monuments throughout the country and was a professor at the Cranbrook College of Fine Arts in Bloomfield Hills, MI. He was able to achieve great artistic success in the US, winning a prize at the Golden Gate Exposition in 1939. Although obtaining US citizenship in 1945, he eventually returned to Lidingo where he remained until his death. He was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters and the National Sculpture Society. Milles is most well known for his imaginative fountain sculpture, which depicts imaginary creatures that are influenced by the early Greek style of German sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand’s work.

(106.7cm) | Width: 22 in. (55.9cm) Height (ensemble): 91 in. | Diameter: 42 in. (106.7cm) Executed in 1916. Provenance Collection of Mrs. George F. Baker, Horseshoe Plantation, Tallahassee, Florida. A gift from the above in 1954. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia (accession number 1954.9a-b). Lot Essay Carl Milles was one of the leading sculptors in Sweden during the last quarter of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. It was Cranbrook Academy founder George Booth who is credited with bringing Milles, along with his wife Olga, to Cranbrook in 1931, later purchasing a number of the sculptor’s works three years later (Cranbrook has nearly eighty Milles sculptures in its collection). Milles was Cranbrook’s first sculptor in residence, and he and Olga lived there until 1951. He frequently found inspiration in Greek and Roman mythology, including Europa and the Bull, Orpheus, and Venus. Naiads, the water nymph daughters of Zeus and Tritons, the sons of Amphitrite and Poseidon, were also favored subjects for Milles, and like many European as well as American sculptors active in the early 20th century, he chose to cast some of these mythological subjects in the form of fountains, as in the present work. Related Triton variants are located in The Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne, at Prins Eugens Waldemarssudde, Stockholm, and in the collection of the Mayo Clinic. Another version of Small Triton Fountain, also executed in 1916, is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Signed and inscribed 'C. Milles Holland' on front of plinth to left. - Exhibition and customs label under the plinth. As the most celebrated Swedish sculptor of the 20th Century, Carl Milles is widely known for his large-scale public commissions and monumental fountains he designed from the 1930'in North America and Europe. The present work belongs instead to the first part of the artist's career, and specifically to the time spent in the Netherlands at the turn of the century, when he got acquainted to the hardship of life conditions for the local working communities and he was influenced by the style of A. Rodin and C. Meunier. This composition, known so far only from later replicas, is considered to be the first version of the subject and the very example exhibited at the Sweden Pavillion at the VIIth Venice Biennale in 1907.

Dimensions bronze : h. 79,5 cm Bronze patina sculpture on a red marble base. Signature and casting stamp "Colin & Cie à Paris". Private Collection, Brussels. This is a work from the artist's first period, strongly influenced by Camille Claudel and Rodin, probably produced in Paris when he was still working in his master's studio.
