      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Original Label verso: The Downtown Gallery, 43rd E 51st Street, New York Edward Millman was a renowned WPA artist whose work emphasized the contribution of the working population throughout history. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and under Diego Rivera. The mural at the St. Louis Post office was the largest grant given out by the WPA for a single mural. The larger mural deals with with trials and tribulations of Missouri history, from its colonization to the Dred Scott case. Millman and his partner, Mitchell Siporin, went to Mexico to study the José Clemente Orozco murals which heavily influenced the style of the piece. Millman's work can be found all over the United States, including Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. This particular study showcases men unloading a skiff from the Mississippi River and the importance fur trading held to the early Missouri economy. Notice the blocky figures that exemplified Orozco's style, the men in this piece are obviously used to toil and long days. Millman particularly admired the Mexican Muralists during the same period. This piece is an amazing touchstone to the WPA movement and muralist art.
