C-Print behind Diasec on Alu-Dibond Japan, 2004 Miwa Yanagi (b. 1967) - Japanese photo and video artist Signed in Japanese ‘Yanagi M’ and numbered '2/7' on a label on the reverse From the series ‘My Grandmothers’ Literature: Cf. Exhib. cat. Circle of Life. Vita Activa. Das Bild des Menschen in der Fotografie der Gegenwart. Eine Auswahl von Dr. Andreas Beitin, ZKM, aus der Teutloff Photo + Video Collection, ed. by Lutz Teutloff, Oldenburg 2014, p. 202 (here erroneously described as a 2-part work), ill. p. 151  Dimensions: 140 x 100 cm Very good condition Provenance: Collection Teutloff, Germany In the present photographic work, Yanagi alludes to the dead body of Christ on one hand; on the other hand, she deals with the aging and the transience of the human body. Shizuka, whose expressive face is marked by deep wrinkles, shapes herself a new body. The photograph depicts the old woman absorbed in thought, maybe musing about the past. Condition: The photograph is in a very good condition, showing only the lightest traces of use to the reverse. The dimensions are 140 x 100 cm. Miwa Yanagi (b. 1967) Miwa Yanagi was born in Kobe and studied at the Kyoto City University of Arts. She had her international breakthrough with an exhibition at the Kunsthalle in Frankfurt in 1996. In her photographic works, which are usually processed digitally, she deals with modern life in Japan, including issues such as anonymity, uniformity and the role of women in the Japanese society. Often, she depicts real existing people set in alienated, digitally altered landscapes and interiors. Yanagi currently lives and works in Kyoto.
