            JAPANESE PRINTS -- MIZUNO TOSHIKATA (1866-1908). A print from the series Sanjurokkassen, Thirty-six famous poets. Streetwalkers from the Onin era, published in 1891 by Akiyama Buemon. This period spanned the years from March 1467 through April 1469. The reigning emperor was Go-Tsuchimikado-tenno. Toshikata was the most important pupil of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. -- Added: UTAGAWA YOSHIMUNE (1817-1880). The Daimyo Ujie Tadamoto looking down from his castle, holding a fan, the sun setting in the distance, from the series Sixty-six selected snow stories. Signed Yoshimune. Published by Akiyama Buermon, 1893. -- Oban. Hinged to mounts, under acid free passepartouts. (Both slightly faded and slightly browned along borders).

Ukiyo-e original multi-coloured woodblock print triptych, 'The Bravery of Captain Matsuzaki (killed in action) During the Great Fierce Battle at Anseong/Anson/Ansong Crossing' 28 Jul 1894, by Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908) depicting Captain Matsuzaki Nao'omi (1856 - 29 Jul 1894, killed in action), also recognised as the very first Japanese casualty of the war, biography from the British Museum included, leading his team to outflank the Chinese Army defences by crossing the Anseong river during the Battle of Seonghwan (Asan) (approx 39.4x80cm). This print is represented in the collection of Harvard Museum of Art, the collection of Philadelphia Museum of Art & the collection of Saint Louis Art Museum.

Ukiyo-e original multi-coloured woodblock print triptych, 'Terrible War of Lieutenant-Commander Sakamoto (killed in action), Leader of the Imperial Warship Akagi, Who Fights Bravely', 17 Sep 1894, by Toshikata Mizuno (1866-1908). It depicts Commander Hachirota Sakamoto (29 Jan 1854 - 17 Sep 1894) killed in action, translated Wikipedia provided), positions his warship Akagi (Wikipedia profile provided) waves his sword during the Yellow Sea (Yalu River) Battle of Sino-Japanese War & organises an attack toward the enemy warships. An injured soldier bandages his wound, on his right, other crew members of vessel are taking the Commander's instruction. Thick smoke comes out of the deck possibly due to being hit by the Chinese warships. From the far point the Chinese warships are either catching fire or sinking (approx 35.7x69.3cm). Cpl tiny edge flts o/w GC. This woodblock is represented in the collection of the Srt Gallery of South Australia & the collection of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston (details of both provided).

Note: Mizuno Toshikata was an ukiyo-e artist and Japanese-style painter of the Meiji period.
