Paula Modersohn-Becker, Sitzender Junge mit Strohhut unter Birken, 1904

      Est: €200,000 - €250,000

Dated '04.' in red lower left. Already shown in 1917 at the major Paula Modersohn-Becker exhibition at Hannover’s Kestner Gesellschaft, the provenance of the painting “Sitzender Junge mit Strohhut unter Birken” prominently features Bernhard Hoetger two years later. His purchase of the work in 1919 and its publication in his essay additionally indicate the significance of this captivating picture of a child (see Hoetger, 1919, op. cit.). The two artists had met in 1906 while both were in the midst of extended stays in Paris, and this meeting developed into an intense collaboration. When World War I began – Paula Modersohn-Becker had already died after giving birth to her child in 1907 – Hoetger and his wife moved to Worpswede, and he explained his choice to live there like this: “In those years, it became more and more clear to me that a landscape in whose air an art like that of Paula Modersohn could grow would also have to be the right atmosphere for my work” (cited in exh. cat. Bernhard Hoetger, Bildhauer – Maler – Baukünstler – Designer, Dortmund, 1984, p. 14). The people in Worpswede, often placed between the birch trees typical of the north German landscape, became one of the main motifs in the work of Paula Modersohn-Becker (see comp. ill.). As if searching for a pristine primitivity, she recorded – much like contemporary colleagues who found their motifs in the South Pacific or along the German shores of the Baltic – the rural populace of Worpswede. This led to images of children that are extraordinarily convincing in their concentrated simplicity: among these, the present example is remarkable for the monumentality of the natural element and the powerful presence of the boy. It is no coincidence that the figure depicted in bold red in the middle ground is reminiscent of a fly agaric mushroom, and she establishes a counterpoint to the earthy colours of the forest while gauging the depth of the depicted space. In terms of colour, the boy’s clothes correspond to the white of the stout birch trunks and his shoes to the earth tone of the forest floor, integrating the figure of the child into the landscape, while the blue of the sky is repeated in the blue of his stockings. The work depicts a sort of allegorical image of the common roots of humankind and nature.

Literature: Günter Busch und Wolfgang Werner: Paula Modersohn-Becker 1876–1907. Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, Munich 1998, vol.II, p. 174, no. 246 (ill.). "Landscape with Three Birch Trunks" is one of Paula Modersohn-Becker's early landscape paintings, created around the turn of the century. This work is a wonderful exemplar of her signature style and innovative approach to landscape painting. Departing from the romanticized landscapes of her contemporaries, Modersohn-Becker painted a raw and unvarnished view of the landscape, characterized by bold brushstrokes and a muted color palette. The artist was able to capture the essence of nature in all its simplicity and depth by focusing on the striking shapes of three birch trunks against a backdrop of a simple meadow. Her works are characterized by emotional depth and mark her as a pioneer in the representation of nature in early 20th-century art. Furthermore, Modersohn-Becker's early landscapes and tree studies are pivotal within the art context of her period. They mark a break with conventional artistic approaches and signal a change in the representation of nature. Born in Germany in 1876, Modersohn-Becker challenged established artistic norms and paved the way for future generations of artists. ------------------------------------------------- PAULA MODERSOHN-BECKER (Dresden 1876–1907 Worpswede) Landschaft mit drei Birkenstämmen. 1901.

PAULA MODERSOHN-BECKER CIRCLE Circle of Paula Modersohn-Becker Children with Lanterns oil/cardboard, 62,5 x 53 cm ESTIMATE °€ 800 - 1600 STARTING PRICE °€ 800 The German painter Paula Modersohn-Becker, née Minna Hermine Paula Becker, was an important representative of early Expressionism. She received her first art lessons at the St. John's Wood Art School in London, founded by Elíseo Abelardo Calderón and Bernard E. Ward. In Bremen she received private painting lessons from Bernhard Wiegandt. In 1898, her uncle Wulf von Bültzingslöwen gave her a trip to Norway as a reward for her successful completion of her studies at the teachers' college; Both of them got to know the paintings of Edvard Munch there. In 1893 she saw pictures of the Worpswede artist circle for the first time in the Kunsthalle Bremen, by Otto Modersohn, Fritz Mackensen, Fritz Overbeck, Hand am Ende and Heinrich Vogler. Modersohn later became Becker's husband. In Berlin she took a course at the drawing and painting school of the Association of Berlin Artists, with Jacob Alberts and Curt Stoeving. In 1896 she began a year and a half of training: portrait painting with Jacob Alberts and Martin Körte, nude painting with Ernst Friedrich Hausmann, and landscape painting with Ludwig Dettmann. During this time she often met Rainer Maria Rilke, whom she later portrayed and who admired her art. A decade earlier, Kätze Kollwitz had studied at the so-called “Women's Academy” of the Association of Berlin Artists. In 1897 Becker was accepted into Jeanna Bauck's painting class at the Ladies Academy. Bauck made her want to go to Paris. In 1899 she met Carl Vinnen and Carl Hauptmann in Berlin. During her years in Berlin, Becker spent a lot of time drawing in museums. Similar to the Nazarenes before them, she particularly valued the artists of the German and Italian Renaissance such as Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, Hans Holbein the Elder. Ä., Titian, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci. Becker repeatedly spent a lot of time in the Worpswede artists' colony and in Paris. The artists of Worpswede, like the Barbizon school founded by Théodore Rousseau, sought a new understanding of nature. From around 1898 she designed Stollwerck pictures on behalf of the Cologne chocolate producer Ludwig Stollwerck together with Otto Modersohn, Fritz Overbeck and Heinrich Vogeler. In Paris she was, among other things, Paula Becker met Auguste Rodin and studied at the Académie Colarossi with Courtois, Collin and Louis-Auguste Girardot. In Paris, Becker visited Ottilie Reylaender, a student of Johann Hinrich Fehr and Fritz Mackensen. Another friend was Clara Westhoff. The Modersohn-Becker couple visited Carl's captain and met the sociologist Werner Sombart there. In Dresden they met Otto Mueller. Inspired by a sculpture shown at the Salon des Indépendants, Becker visited the sculptor Bernhard Hoetger in his Paris studio, which left a lasting impression on her and in her painting. As a result of her second stay in Paris around 1900, monumentality and severity in composition and form became increasingly important in Becker's work, which points to an intensive engagement with Paul Gaugin, Henri Matisse and Paul Cézanne. Furthermore, the stylistic proximity of her children's portraits to the paintings of the young Picasso from the Blue and Pink Periods is striking. Elements of Cubism can be seen in the portraits from 1906 and 1907. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. Paula Modersohn-Becker, Landschaft mit Birkenweg im Herbst, Circa 1900

      Est: €80,000 - €100,000

Verso with faded illegible confirmation by Otto Modersohn and inscribed "Worpswede Sept. 1923" and "L H HB"[?]. The landscape of Worpswede is defined by the brown of the moor, the greenish brown of the heather, the windswept trees and a lofty sky. It was in these inhospitable surroundings - which offered their inhabitants only a modest living defined by difficult labour - where Paula Modersohn-Becker lived from 1898, when she joined the artist's colony which had gathered there around her teacher Fritz Mackensen, Hans am Ende, Heinrich Vogeler and her future husband Otto Modersohn. Like her male colleagues, she found an inexhaustible source of inspiration in the austere beauty of the landscape and the simple existence of its inhabitants. From the beginning the artist was searching for her own independent way of expressing herself artistically - earnestly and unsentimentally seeking the greatest possible authenticity. She developed a reductive, two-dimensional manner of painting that concentrated on the image's essential messages. This was entirely in harmony with nature's unwelcoming character at Worpswede and additionally pointed to the new ideas among avant-garde artists. Here, between the clouds torn apart by the wind, a gently blue sky rises above a landscape dominated by tones of brown. A farm track describes a gentle curve in the middle of the heather-covered fields; it is lined with young birch trees whose leaves have already turned to autumn colours. Their delicately rising little trunks form the focus of the painter's interest while the plain stretching all the way to the horizon is summarily depicted. There is a balance between the earthy gravity and the optimism in this work from around 1900, and they can be seen as a metaphor for the course that Paula Modersohn-Becker's artistic development would take in the years that followed.
