Mönsted / Capri 1883. Frame: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. When one hears the name Peder Moerk Moensted, the words "clarity" and "landscape" come associatively to mind. That characteristic, photorealistic clarity was something the Danish artist came to know, appreciate and adapt already as a young man. Like all great artists of the 19th century, Moensted first studied at the art academy. He expanded his knowledge and artistic skills through numerous journeys, across Europe and also North Africa. Although Moensted was a gifted portraitist who was literally overwhelmed by commissions, it is his idyllic landscapes that can be regarded as the artist's favourite motifs. The focus here was entirely on the radiant power of nature and its unspoiltness, which enchanted not only the artist himself, but above all his admirers. His landscapes stood in stark contrast to industrialisation and, retrospectively, bear witness to an escapism that testifies to a profound longing for times past. The present painting exemplifies the clarity, luminosity and idyllic quality of Moensted's landscapes - he creates a place where one wants to linger, to have time to pause and rest. The view of the extensive pergola on Capri's coast stands out for its skilful composition and application of vibrant colours, which in combination lift the painting to a new level of depth. Drawing and colour take on an equal value in Moensted's depiction of Capri, and do not - as usual - compete with each other. Explanations to the Catalogue

Peder Mork Moensted (Denmark, Netherlands, 1859 - 1941) Peder Mork Monsted was a leading Danish landscape painter of his time, known for his photo-realist style. He trained at the Copenhagen Academy from 1876-1879 and worked under the artists Peder Severin Kroyer and William Adolphe Bouguereau. Monsted traveled throughout his career, including to France, Switzerland, Italy, and North Africa. Although most well known for his landscapes, he did paint portraits and figural scenes as well. Monsted was the favorite painter of King George of Greece; he was invited to Athens in 1893 where he painted the city and the Greek countryside for a year. Monsted was able to successfully convey the mood and atmosphere of the locales that he visited; whether it was the towering peaks of the Swiss Alps or the tranquility of the woods in his home country. Monsted exhibited his works at the Charlottenborg Palace in Copenhagen, and his paintings are featured today all over the world, including the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York and the Chi Mei Museum in Tainan, Taiwan.

MOENSTED, PEDER MORK 1859 Grenaa - Kopenhagen 1941 Am sommerlichen Dorfweiher Öl auf Leinwand, 69 cm x 98,5 cm, unten rechts signiert und datiert ‚P. Monsted 1922', verso auf umgeklapptem Leinwandrand handschriftl. nummeriert ‚No. 16', Keilrahmen unleserlich handschriftlich (wohl nachträglich) bezeichnet, rest., Rahmen. In den Jahren 1876 bis 1879 besuchte der dänische Maler Peder Mork Moensted die Kopenhagener Kunstakademie. Obwohl auch im Bereich der Portraitmalerei tätig, liegt der Schwerpunkt seines Oeuvres eindeutig in der Landschaftsmalerei. Besonders hervorzuheben sind dabei seine nahezu photographischen und naturgetreuen Wintergemälde und Waldlandschaften.
