For over three decades, she has worked predominantly in photography and film, creating works that are as much about storytelling as they are about visual form. Moffatt’s narratives often draw on personal memory and reflect on broader themes such as race, gender, sexuality, and identity, offering layers of meaning that resonate deeply with her audience. Her series "Invocations" (2000), first shown at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, continues the large-scale format and rich colour palette of her earlier work, "Something More". Shot in New York, this series of photo-silkscreen images presents a surreal world of fantasy and high drama, filled with elaborate sets and actors. The imagery includes children, hooded figures, and symbolic elements like twisted trees, evoking cinematic and literary references from both fairytales and Southern Gothic storytelling. The action shifts seamlessly between forest and desert, creating a dreamlike atmosphere unconcerned with linear narrative or continuity. The grand scale and composition of Invocations, along with its vivid colour and dramatic mood, recall the tradition of Old Master paintings. Moffatt masterfully blends dark, fairytale-like elements with subtle humour, constructing a self-contained universe that defies easy interpretation while inviting endless exploration. In this series, Moffatt once again demonstrates her ability to engage viewers with rich, layered works that challenge and reward in equal measure. This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.

TRACEY MOFFATT 1960- #1, #3, #9 & #14, LAUDANUM SERIES, ED. 21/60, 1998 toned photogravure print on rag paper various signed front bottom right 'Tracey Moffatt, 98' PROVENANCE Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sydney, NSW Private Collection, NSW EXHIBITED Tracey Moffatt, Laudanum, Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, NSW, 14 April – 8 May 1999 ©Tracey Moffatt / Copyright Agency, 2024 #1, 76 x 57 cm (paper); 99 x 70 cm (framed) #3, 76 x 57 cm (paper); 99 x 70 cm (framed) #9, 57 x 76 cm (paper); 70 x 99 cm (framed) #14, 76 x 57 cm (paper); 99 x 70 cm (framed) This image is from a series of 19 photogravures by Tracey Moffatt, called Laudanum. Laudanum was a popular opiate-based drug in the nineteenth century, used to calm colicky babies and ‘hysterical’ women. In this series, shot in a colonial mansion, Moffatt conjures a hallucinatory narrative of sexual violence between a white mistress and her Asian maid, filtered through what seems to be a drug-fuelled haze. Moffatt started out as a filmmaker, and this series draws on a range of cinematic, visual and literary devices to create the claustrophobic atmosphere of the mansion and the murderous game that unfolds within its walls. She employs the technique of photogravure, a form of photographic etching using a copper plate, to recreate the authentic look of a nineteenth century photograph with its full range of soft grey tones and uneven focus. To further the historical effect, Moffatt frames the images in formats favoured by early photographers, and poses her subjects like the models of illicit French postcards from the turn of the century. Moffatt cleverly blends these photographic styles with cinematic devices drawn from twentieth-century expressionist films like Nosferatu (1922) and tense psychological dramas like The Servant (1963). The disturbing story which unfolds over the course of the 19 images is a narrative of sexual subservience and domination akin to the musings of the Marquis de Sade or the erotic novel The Story of O (1954). Moffatt concocts a fantasy of the hidden and unrecorded lives of nineteenth-century women; the servants and mistresses bound by corsets and convention, but unbound by drugs and desire. By adopting the style of early photography and setting this drama within the confines of a Victorian mansion, Moffatt suggests a depravity underlying the bourgeois respectability and gentility synonymous with those times. In drawing on so many references she creates a rich evocation of the historical depiction of sexual, racial and social tensions in art and film. - Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.

            Est: $8,000 - $10,000

TRACEY MOFFATT 1960- #1 & #4 INVOCATIONS SERIES, ED 45/60, 2000 photo silkscreen 122 x 146 cm; 131 x 156 (framed) & 109 x 96.5 cm; 118 x 106 cm (framed) signed front bottom right 'Tracey Moffatt' PROVENANCE Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sydney NSW Private Collection, NSW EXHIBITED Tracey Moffatt, Invocations, Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sydney, NSW, 20 July – 12 August 2000 ©Tracey Moffatt / Copyright Agency, 2024 #1, 22 x 146 cm; 131 x 156 (framed) #4, 109 x 96.5 cm; 118 x 106 cm (framed) The 13 images in the series Invocations are uncanny excursions into another world, drawn from the imagery of dreams, visions, fairy tales and thrillers – a shared cultural memory reaching back to the eighteenth century. Their eeriness cuts across styles, genres and even mediums – these are images made to look like something else: silkscreened photographic prints that have been built up layer-by-layer to look like paintings, using formats that resemble old daguerreotypes and lantern slides. Moffatt is a picture-maker rather than a picture-taker. With a background in film, she constructs sets and works with actors to realise her cinematic narratives. The surreal drama of Invocations was based on a dream and delves into what Moffatt has called ‘the dark underworld that we all have … it’s about the murk in all of us, the subconscious.’ Moffatt has compared the making of Invocations, and the arcane ways in which it progressed from dream to object, to a kind of witchcraft. She worked with set builders and actors in a studio to take photographs, which were then silkscreened by hand ‘colour after colour, screen after screen, so the pictures have this sort of built up feel: like a pastel, a watercolour. And it’s very physical. I wanted the physicality of paint on paper. I wanted it to be sensual.’ The fairy tale world she creates in Invocations is peopled by witches and spirits, the lost and vulnerable, who stumble through scenes and landscapes summoned from Disney’s animations, Hitchcock’s movies, Goya’s paintings and the stories of the Brothers Grimm. -Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, all quotes by Tracey Moffatt interviewed by Bruce James, ABC Arts, 9 January 2001. This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.
