  • Abdul Latiff Mohidin (b. Negeri Sembilan, 1941) One Cloud One Day (Pago-Pago Series), 1970
    Jul. 17, 2022

Abdul Latiff Mohidin (b. Negeri Sembilan, 1941) One Cloud One Day (Pago-Pago Series), 1970

    Est: RM6,000 - RM12,000

As printmaker Juhari Said noted, in his research into Latiff Mohidin’s graphic works, being railroaded into New York at the Pratt Graphic Centre (1970), Latiff developed a new mindset, which resulted in a seismic shift in his artistic style and production from the organic growth of his Pago-Pago to a phalanx of lines and geometric shapes. “That was the end of his Pago-Pago phase,” Juhari avers. Latiff had imbibed the best of printmaking in the German tradition (Berlin), the French touches (Atelier LaCouriere) and the American contemporaneity. A national treasure in paint, print (printmaking), bronze / stainless steel (sculpture) and letters (poet, essayist and translator in three languages – Malay, English and German), Latiff Mohidin hit a career peak in art when his celebrated Pago-Pago Series (1960-1969) headlined a three-month exhibition at the prestigious Pompidou Centre in Paris from February to May 2018. He was awarded a major Retrospective by the National Art Gallery in December 2012 to June 2013, his second. He studied at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst in West Berlin. His international awards included the John D. Rockefeller III Fellowship to study at Pratt Institute (1965) and the French scholarship to study printmaking at the Atelier Lacouriere-Frelaut in Paris (1969). Locally, he won 2nd Prize (Graphics) in the 1968 Salon Malaysia. In literature, his awards included the SEA Write Award (1984 and 1986) and the Malaysian Literary Awards from 1972 to 1976.

  • Abdul Latiff Mohidin (b. Negeri Sembilan, 1941) Pago-Pago, 1966
    Jul. 17, 2022

    Abdul Latiff Mohidin (b. Negeri Sembilan, 1941) Pago-Pago, 1966

    Est: RM25,000 - RM35,000

It's interesting to note this 1966 Pago-Pago with its almost circular centrist monolith, with what looks like a hole in the centre, and bereft of the usual sharp flanges at the top, or at least some tiered pagoda typical of his Southeast Asian travels. It looks like some kind of plant form rather than a man-made structure. Latiff Mohidin was still in Europe, most probably Berlin, after imbibing the great European modern artistic impulses all over with the after-thought how these were inspired, influenced by other “non-European” cultures. How what he called the “trunk root of tradition” could prevail even when the painting's preoccupation was on divergent and unrelated subjects or images. As he intoned: “Art is a living energy, art is like a flowing river…” Latiff Mohidin’s international profile took a quantum leap with the landmark Pago-Pago (1960-1969) exhibition at the prestigious Centre Pompidou in Paris on February 28 to May 28, 2018. Regarded as a national treasure for his contributions in paint and sculptures and in letters (poetry), Latiff made history when accorded his second Retrospective (Latiff Mohidin 60 Years) by the National Art Gallery, Malaysia, in 2012-2013. His tutelage did not come with the British yellow-brick-road tradition, but in the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste, Berlin; Atelier La Courier-Frelaut, Paris; and Pratt Institute, New York. His main art award was 2nd Prize (Graphic) in the Salon Malaysia in 1968. He is a literary giant, having won the SEA Write Award in Bangkok in 1984, the National Literary Award in 1984 and 1986, and the Malaysian Government literary prize from 1972-1976. He was a Creative Fellow at Universiti Sains Malaysia (1977) and a guest writer at the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (1988).

  • Abdul Latiff Mohidin (b. Negeri Sembilan, 1941) Rimba-96-II (Rimba Series), 1996
    Jul. 17, 2022

Abdul Latiff Mohidin (b. Negeri Sembilan, 1941) Rimba-96-II (Rimba Series), 1996

    Est: RM20,000 - RM26,000

This intuitive broken squiggles like calligraphy represent the lowland peat swamps so crucial to the balance of the ecosystems of animal, bird, plant and marine life. They resemble root structures of pneumatophores in mangrove forests. The stark, sparse lines in the work reveal the fragility and vulnerability of indiscriminate human intervention. With Southeast Asia cornering some 60 percent of the world’s tropical peatlands, storing vast amounts of carbon below ground, the decimation of these habitats through clearing, burning or drainage for conversion to plantation crops and other uses, is a recipe for ecological disaster. The importance of peat cannot be under-estimated. In the UK, it has banned sale of peat compost from 2024 and has even allocated the equivalent of some RM293m for the restoration of peatland.
