Haron Mokhtar is known for his original use of space – and often, his compositions contain architecture at the top part of the canvas, and the people associated with said architecture at the bottom half, resulting in a substantial amount of empty space in between. In this piece, Haron illustrates a school – Shih Chung Primary School, and then leaves a whole space vacant in the middle with a painting of someone riding a trishaw looking at the school. With very little effort, Haron utilises the availability of space to link two different types of subjects on canvas. The choice of red hues suggest the time of the scenery took place after school during a sunset. There is a certain joy that comes off the work. As if greeting an ending to welcome another day, a new beginning.

        Est: RM7,000 - RM12,000

Haron Mokhtar’s appreciation for heritage and culture is portrayed in his thoughtfully composed paintings. By pairing traditional architecture with local society, Haron preserves cultural legacy in his visual chronicles. On offer here is a couple of paintings - one features a traditional Malay kampung house paired with a trio of cultural female dancers executed in his characteristic minimalist style. The kampung house is painted on the upper section of the canvas and the traditional dancers are placed on the lower centre of the composition. Shifting the viewer’s focus from the centre, Haron deliberately marks a straight line and applying the colour grey as background on the lower part of the canvas, leaving a void in the middle. Another painting illustrates a British colonial mansion and a man on a cycle rickshaw. The rigidness seen from the other painting is absent here but instead, Haron explores an expressionistic approach to illustrate his subject matter. The negative space in the centre remains but his brushstrokes are visible. His liberal gestures move in various directions. The opacity of its background palette green varies in consistency granting a sense of space for the viewer. Haron Mokhtar has held eight solo exhibitions since his first in 1995. His solo shows included Haron Mokhtar: Kapsul Masa 1988-2018 (Siri Perakam Waktu) at Galeri Shah Alam, Selangor, curated by Faizal Sidek in 2018; Yesteryear Part I and II at Interpr8 Art Space, Publika in 2015; and Siri Warisan at Pelita Hati, Kuala Lumpur in 2011, among others.

The Candle Dance (Tarian Lilin), which is said to have originated from Sumatra, Indonesia, has been arrogated as Malaysia's own with its own moves, gestures, costumes and music. It is a graceful dance which requires synchronization with a group of dancers holding a plate of lit candle on each hand and ensuring that the fire is not extinguished and the plate kept horizontal with the movement of the hands in rotating the plates, and swaying and bending of the bodies, and even kneeling, to the rhythm of music. The dance is said to have been inspired by a lovely maiden who was given a ring by her suitor who had to go away. She lost it and was distraught when it got dark, so she lit a candle on a plate to continue her search. As an educator, Haron Mokhtar has been active in various teaching roles and at the same time contributing his knowledge in Visual Arts as an examiner and syllabus drafter for the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia examinations (STPM, Malaysian Higher School Certificate). It is unsurprising that Semangat Anak-Anak Didik (The Enthusiasm of Students) resonates with the life of Haron Mokhtar as an educator. It depicts young pupils from remote areas pursuing a canopy walkway to get to school and home everyday. The bluish-green palette that dominates the picture denotes the environment, while the void between the traditional native dwelling above and the figures below allows some room for introspection for the artist and the observer.    Haron Mokhtar attained BA Fine Art in Painting and Printmaking from UiTM (1983 – 1987).
