'Raja kuning' , signed 'Idw. Pt Mokoh.' (lower right); signed again and annotated 'Pengosekan./ Ubud./ Bali.'; titled and numbered '15' (written on the reverse), acrylic on canvas, unframed, 70x60 cm, , , Pole climbing or Panjat Pinang was still seen as a recent modernity in 1940. I Wajan Bhadra, in 'Some Balinese Riddles' (Eenige Balische Raadsels), writes the following about it: 'That Balinese artists are generally not dismissive of "penetration" of new things is proven among other things in many reliefs on outer walls of temples in northern Bali. On the outer wall of the Poera dalem of Djagaraga, for instance, one can admire very modern images, although they must surely be at least 15 years old. For instance, one can see there two fighter planes in action, one pilot already falling out ; pole climbing....'*Today, pole climbing is a popular tradition in Bali and elsewhere in the archipelago to commemorate the Independence on August 17. Young men do their best to get the prizes hanging at the top of the pole after managing to climb the soap-coated pole. A tradition probably introduced by the Dutch in the first decades of the 20th century. In his painting, Mokoh shows enthusiastic youths encouraging some pole climbers to grab the prizes; clothes, shoes or pans. Dewa Putu Mokoh (1934-2012) was born in Pengosekan, Ubud, Bali. He studied Balinese wayang style painting with his uncles I Gusti Ketut Kobot and I Gusti Made Baret, both of whom were central figures in the Pita Maha artists' association. He has participated in group exhibitions in Australia, USA, Japan, Singapore, Finland, Holland, Denmark, Germany and Italy. Mokoh exhibited at the Venice Biennial in a two-man exhibition with Mondo in 1993, and he had a solo exhibition at the Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan in 1995. Mokoh had been painting all his life, and was only recently gaining the recognition he deserved. Mokoh's works are often characterised by family scenes. His work breathes intimacy, sensuality and a yearning for the days of childhood, with a humour.  Mokoh has been an innovator in Balinese painting with his seemingly simple compositions. His depiction of Balinese daily life takes the viewer into his intense focus on nature or family life, on relationships between people in private as well as in the open.Sources:https://www.artforum.com.sg/dewaputumokohhttps://archive.org/stream/in.ernet.dli.2015.534102/2015.534102.djawa-tijdschrift_djvu.txt:I Wajan Bhadra, ‘Eenige Balische Raadsels’, in ‘Tijdschrift van het Java-Insituut’, Vol. 21, Twintigste jaargang 1940
