SALVADOR MOLET (Barcelona, 1773- 1836). "Flowers. Oil on paper. Signed on the back. On the back, there is a pencil drawing of a still life. It has been restored and has small paper tears in the lower margin. Measurements: 36,5 x 26,5 cm. Salvador Molet was a Spanish painter who specialised in painting flowers and still lifes. Trained at the Escuela de Dibujo de la Lonja founded by the Junta de Comercio de Barcelona, he excelled in the genre of flowers, in which he was awarded prizes from 1786 to 1789. In 1790 he was granted a scholarship by the Board of Trade to continue his studies with Benito Espinós at the Studio of Flowers and Ornaments set up in Valencia by order of Charles IV to support the silk industry. The Board of Trade itself was responsible for acquiring Molet's works, in compensation for the payment of the pension, and some by Espinós to serve as models for the flower class at the La Lonja school, which Molet himself took charge of on his return to Barcelona in June 1794 and until his death in 1836. A significant number of Molet's works are therefore kept in the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi, some of them sent during the years of his apprenticeship in Valencia and others the result of his long teaching career. In them he shows himself to be a close follower of Espinós and Valencian flower painting, emphasising the artistic rather than the purely industrial orientation and with a taste for the architectural details of monumental vases and ruins that brings his painting close to incipient Romanticism.
