b. 1966 -

Roberto Mollá (b. 1966, Valencia, Spain) is a Spanish artist associated with the Contemporary Postconceptual Painting. He has worked in the media of painting, drawing and photography. Mollá received a BFA in 1989 from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) with a Major in Painting. His work has been exhibited in galleries, art fairs and museums in Spain, USA, Switzerland, Japan, Korea and China.

Influenced by contemporary literature, Japanese floating world iconography, and urban landscape-among other contemporary pressures-his paintings pay their respect to art historical sources as well. Maker of hybrid paintings and works on paper, drawing on the heterodox intersection of Japanese popular art, surrealism and vorticism, Roberto Molla’s work seems to explore notions of transformation, visual disturbance and memory.

Mollá’s work can be found in numerous private and public collections worldwide, and his exhibitions have been featured extensively online and in publications including El Mundo, Asahi Shimbun, NEO2, Whitewall Magazine, ABC, Arte10, Lost at E Minor, The Herald Tribune, La Máquina Contemporánea, Urban Omnibus and many others. He currently lives and works in Valencia, Spain.

Roberto Molla, Original Mixed Media on Graph Paper, Signed

      Est: $200 - $800

A striking original drawing by Spanish contemporary post conceptual artist Robert Molla, titled Barbadillo en Minowa 5, created using sumi ink, graphite, and gouache on cream-colored graph paper. It depicts a geisha holding a teapot, her face obscured by a deep red oval, as she listens to a conversation between two Manga characters partially hidden behind a shoji door, while artwork by Manuel Barbadillo appears in the middle, to whom Molla pays homage. This work draws inspiration from Japanese floating world iconography and ukiyo-e woodcuts, while the use of graph paper pays tribute to the 1960's and 70's artists whose work incorporated the grid, exploring both its freedoms and constraints. Artist signature, date, and title on lower right. Housed in a wooden shadowbox with a white background. Artwork dimensions: 15.5"L x 11.75"H. Frame dimensions: 18.75"L x 1.75"W x 14.75"H.
