        Ferdinand Montemayor (b. 1965) Huntahan

        Est: ₱15,000 - ₱19,500

Ferdinand Montemayor (b. 1965) Huntahan signed and dated 2015 (lower right) mixed media on paper 28” x 22” (71 cm x 56 cm) Ferdie Montemayor is most known for his oeuvres that are inspired by his hometown, Antipolo. Cluttered and chaotic with a hint of harmony, the artist is able to captivate his audience with stylized cityscapes. His paintings feature a trademark use of vigorous brushstrokes, one that strongly captures the spirit and atmosphere of the urban spaces. Other than that, his ideologies are often centered around social realist themes. However, the two Montemayor works only portray a few persons rather than a crowd with multitudes of people. The oil piece is titled Pasalubong, the local term for a souvenir given to a friend or relative by someone who has returned from a trip or arrived for a visit. And the mixed media piece is titled Huntahan, which means a conversation of a group of people or a meeting place for casual talk. In 1994, Montemayor was honored with the Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines. (P.I.R.)

        Ferdie Montemayor (b. 1965)

        Est: ₱200,000 - ₱260,000

Ferdie Montemayor (b. 1965) Ganap signed and dated 2007 (lower right and verso) acrylic on canvas 20" x 72" (51 cm x 183 cm) Ferdie Montemayor is a founding member of the Salingpusa artists' collective. As a visual artist, his oeuvre is primarily influenced by his hometown of Antipolo. The sprawling view of the city from a vantage point overlooking the cityscape of neighboring Metropolitan Manila has provided an endless source of artistic inspiration for Montemayor. This is perfectly encapsulated in his Bayan series, done in a span of more than a decade, from the 1990s to the mid-2000s. The Bayan series tackles the subject of urbanization that spilled outside the realms of the metropolis and defined much of the '90s decade. Montemayor explores the expanse of the urban spaces by observing life on the "macro" scale, then delving into the intersection of different elements within a metropolitan area. In this piece titled Ganap, Montemayor paints an image of a bustling cityscape, with people, cars, and man-made structures, such as houses and towers, converging to define a modernday city. The canvas features Montemayor's trademark use of vigorous brushstrokes, with the dominance of a robust orange palette emphasizing the often chaotic and densely populated urban spaces. In 1994, Montemayor was bestowed with the prestigious Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines. His works are found in the Singapore Art Museum and the Pinto Art Museum collections. (A.M.)

Ferdinand Montemayor (b.1965) Message Sent signed and dated 2003 (lower right) acrylic on canvas 78” x 78” (198 cm x 198 cm)   Exhibited: Artis Corpus Gallery, Looks Kill, December 6-29, 2010   WRITE UP: Tarlac-born social realist Ferdinand Montemayor is one of the founders of the Antipolo-based artist group Salingpusa. Being based in Antipolo his entire life also influenced his works; his widely celebrated Bayan series was inspired by the images of the city from the city’s vantage point. The paintings belonging to this series showed the gradual urbanization of key cities in the country during the 1990s. Damaging effects of urbanization such as pollution and congestion are among the features of his works.   Montemayor painted with attention to details from an aerial view, expressionist brushstroke, and strong hues—as presented by this featured 2003 piece titled Message Sent—continuing the series until the mid-2000s. Here, people are also depicted as interacting in public and private spaces. Montemayor, who graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of the Philippines in 1989, was part of the first group show of the Salingpusa in 1987. He also participated in the interaction murals created by its members for the Infanta Cathedral and Café Dada of Brix Gallery. In 1994, he was chosen as one of recipients of the CCP Thirteen Artist Awards.

        Est: ₱200,000 - ₱260,000

Ferdinand Montemayor (b. 1965) One Man and A Band #2 signed and dated 2018 (lower right) acrylic on canvas 60” x 48” (152 cm x 122 cm)     Provenance: Pinto Art Museum, Antipolo City   WRITE UP: visual artist Ferdinand Montemayor creates nuanced works of art that views life from a macro-perspective. His large scale artistic outings analyzes the relationship between individuals, groups, and communities by deconstructing their various physical and surface-level properties and translates them into basic semblances of movement, shape, and form. Thus his works can be seen as a metaphor for the connections, interactions, and relationships created from the nuances of human life. The visual elements are not mere groupings of random lines. For one, they are highly cohesive, seemingly possessed by a common force in the contagion of pressing entities.
