MOOR (1883-1946) Size: 19 x 27 5/8 in./48 x 70.2 cm Dimitry Moor, a prolific propagandist for the Soviet Union, was also the chief illustrator for Bezbozhnik magazine (which translates to "Atheist" or "Godless"). Bezbozhnik, founded in 1922, was the vanguard for the League of Militant Atheists, which was committed to the abolition of religion in favor of an anti-religious, scientific mindset among the proletariat. This is an early advertisement for Bezbozhnik, announcing "I'm the Atheist," and promising the reader that "every issue contains 24 pages" with "colored and black and white features." It features a photomontage: a photo of Lenin, right over the Atheist's heart which is bleeding red. (Literary; Soviet)

Moor is one of the most famous and prolific propaganda artists of the early USSR, and here is one of his earliest contributions to the Revolutionary cause. This lot features two images: the first, a small print certified by the State Agency Moscow in 1919; the second, a large maquette or replica created from that image in pencil, print and paint (by a hand other than Moor's). This image was created in the middle of the Russian Civil War, as Bolsheviks, White Russians, Black Russians (Anarchists), and Cossacks were all fighting for territory in Northern Russia, Siberia and South Russia as British and French forces intervened and the outcome of the revolution hung by a thread. Condition B+: tears, creases and abrasions along vertical and horizontal folds; pin holes in corners. Paper. Dmitry Stakhievich Orlov (who later took the surname Moor) was one of the most recognized creators of Soviet political posters, applying his wit and political dissatisfaction to a uniquely graphic style of ink drawings dramatically accentuated with bright (often red) color. His chosen pseudonym was borrowed from Karl Moor, the main character of Friedrich Schiller's drama The Robbers, who the artist believed "ideally rendered his artistic temperament: firm and assertive, not inclined to good-natured humour" (Russian-IC). Following his work in support of the October Revolution, Moor focused his satire on antireligious, and later anti-Nazi propaganda, as well as a select few film posters before his death in 1967.
