      George Vertue (1684 London - 1756 ibid.) after Antonis Mor (around 1516 Utrecht - before 1576 Antwerp): Portrait of Queen Mary I, Queen of England and Ireland, c. 1736, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: Signed in the printing plate: "Antonio More pinx. / Designid & Engravid by G. Vertue.". At the center inscribed in the printing plate: "Queen Mary I.". Lower right further inscription: "From a picture in possession of R.t Hon.ble the Earl of Oxford.". Date: c. 1736 Description: Breastpiece facing the viewer, in an oval inscribed frame, decorated with insignia of sovereignty, crown and sceptre as well as a censer and cross. The sitter's name is inscribed on the frame. Around the coat of arms medallion the phrase 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' (literally: "Shame on those who think ill of it"), the motto of the English Order of the Garter. Signed below on the right on the plinth, below the depiction in the printing plate the signature of the etcher.       OIL ON CANVAS - 19th c Academic Copy of the State Portrait of Queen Mary I of England, aka 'Tudor Mary' or 'Bloody Mary', by Antonis Mor (Neth., 1517-1577). Mary (1516-1558), the daughter of Henry VIII, half-sister to Elizabeth I, ruled 1553-1558; this portrait was painted in 1554, the original hangs in the Prado Museum. This very well painted copy is housed in a replica Renaissance frame, OS: 48" x 36 1/2". SS: 38 1/2" x 27". Fine overall craquelere, single flaw in background upper left.
