Moraeu-Vauthier' and 'F. Barbedienne Foundeur' On the reverse of the globe foundry stamp 'Reduction Mecanique. A Collas Brevete' Underneath in ink numbered '37368' Dimensions of plinth: 2 x 15 x 15 cm Total height: approx. 63 cm Very good condition underneath The auction record for a Fortuna sculpture by the artist is currently set at approx. €29,000 Lovingly detailed bronze figure in the interplay of movement and standstill This bronze figure was originally made by Augustin Moraeu-Vauthier and portraits the goddess of fortune, Fortuna. In great detail she is being presented balancing on the wheel of fortune, which is positioned on the globe. From underneath the globe is being supported by a cloudscape, which rests on a square plinth. Two putti surround the globe. The goddess is carrying two of her characteristical attributes: in her left hand is a ship's rudder, while she holds a cornucopia in her right hand. A cloth is wrapped around her body, clinging to her in the wet style of Greek Antiquity at the front and seeming to flutter in a breeze behind her back. Works like this were very popular at that time and due to the great demand, casts in other sizes were being produced. This was for example done by the famous foundry Barbedienne in Paris. It was established in 1838 by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas. He had invented a method to mechanically reduce sculptures in size and reproduce them. The bronze is in a good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. One wing of a putto shows a crack. At the sides the plinth is inscribed with 'A. Moraeu-Vauthier' and 'F. Barbedienne Foundeur'. On the reverse of the globe the foundry stamp 'Reduction Mecanique. A Collas Brevete' is visible. Underneath the sculpture is numbered in ink '37368'. The maximum height of the sculpture measures approx. 63 cm. Augustin Edme Moraeu-Vauthier (1831-1893) The famous French sculptor Augustin Moraeu-Vauthier was born on the 8th of May in Paris as new member of a family of artists. He became pupil of the sculptor Armand Toussaint and specialized in designing allegorical and mythological figures, decorations and ivory carvings. His fame is also due to his various works in plaster, stone, marble of which some were executed in bronze. In 1893 three of his pieces were exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition.
