JULIAN MORALES (Cuban, 1936-1990) Untitled, 1987 Oil on board 22-1/2 x 29 inches (57.2 x 73.7 cm) Signed and dated lower center: Morales, 87 PROVENANCE: From the Estate of John Casuccio, Toronto NOTE: In 1965 Julian Morales became one of the founders of the Hermanos Salz brigade of Plastic Arts (UNEAC). He used diverse material for painting, partly because of lack of resources at that time; nevertheless he was a high-spirited artist who painted on cloth, plywood, cardboard and above all masonite. Morales was an experimenter: oil, ink, asphalt or other oily pigments were poured in water. This material extended due to the superficial fluid tension creating very interesting effects which constantly changed shape. At that point a cardboard was put into contact with the fluid surface to absorb part of the water thus leaving the oil print after dried.
