Thomas Yellowstone Moran Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, Naval painter, Wood cutter, Lithographer, Engraver, Etcher, Illustrator, b. 1837 - d. 1926

British artist Thomas Moran immigrated to the United States as a child and served as an engraver's apprentice before embarking on the Hayden expedition in 1871. Its purpose was to provide the first detailed survey of the Yellowstone region, and Thomas Moran’s paintings would prove to be an invaluable record of the expedition, as well as help make his career as a landscape artist.

Although the style of his paintings was in part influenced by fellow English artist J.M.W. Turner, Thomas Moran's artwork played an instrumental role in illustrating the American West and preserving Yellowstone as a national park for future generations. Upon his death in the early 20th century, he was called the "Dean of American Landscape Painters," and Thomas Moran paintings and prints remain popular. Art enthusiasts can find their next masterpieces when looking through watercolor paintings for sale at auction or online.

"Grand Canyon of Arizona from Hermit Rim Road" chromolithograph, published by American Lithography Company, New York, NY for the Santa Fe Railway, 1913. Signed and dated 1912 (date for the original painting) in the plate. Thomas Moran joined John Wesley Powell on an expedition to the Grand Canyon in 1873. This chromolithograph is after a painting that Moran created depicting the Kaibab Plateau on the north rim. The composition features a picturesque view over the canyon rim and across the peaks framed by evergreens with a birds-eye view of the river below. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway used Moran's artwork to promote tourism. Interestingly, Moran's painting is still owned by the company. A grand view of the Grand Canyon by Thomas Moran on an impressively large size, mounted in custom, museum-quality framing with attractive fillets and a triple mat. Size (sight view): 25.25" L x 34.25" W (64.1 cm x 87 cm) Size (frame): 39.5" L x 48.75" W (100.3 cm x 123.8 cm) Another chromolithograph of Moran's "The Grand Canyon of Arizona, from Hermit Rim Road" is listed by Arader Galleries for $12,000 with a wonderful contextual description that reads in part, "To the great majority of Americans who did not have the resources or daring to travel to the West, Moran provided this image of the country's infinite potential as symbolized by its dramatic, unique landscape. The artist showed American expansion as a fated conclusion, a glorious destiny indelibly written in the literal stone of the country's landscape. Like so many Americans who found such startling significance in the landscape of the American West, Moran was not a native. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1844 from his native England. Beginning as a wood engraver's apprentice in Philadelphia, he produced an extraordinarily broad range of works: designs for wood engravings, large dramatic oil paintings, small quiet watercolors, and delicate etchings. One of the most celebrated artists of the day, Moran was intimately in tune with the spirit of his age, and this, combined with his phenomenal artistic talent, accounts for much of his fame. Moran painted out of genuine passion, and was not simply responding to a commercial opportunity. For this reason he was uniquely able to understand and capture visually the symbolic significance of the American landscape, and his imagery resonated strongly with a populace hungry for views to complement their romantic conceptions of the distant frontier. Yet for all of his nostalgia, Moran was a realist. He recognized that the beauty of the West needed no embellishment, and his portrayals and views of the West presented it as it was. Thomas Moran's pictures of the West resonate perhaps even more strongly today than at the time of their production. The optimism visible in his work echoes with the experience of the remainder of the 20th century, and it is with increasing nostalgia for that time of infinite promise that today's viewers regard the artist's work. Moran's images have grown in appeal, rather than wane, and 'The Grand Canyon' represents an opportunity to acquire significant work by an unparalleled artist of the American West." Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Thomas Moran (American, 1837-1926) Untitled (Ruins) watercolor on paper signed T. Moran (lower right); inscribed (verso) 10 x 14 inches. This lot is located in Chicago. In 1856, Thomas Moran finished Among the Ruins He Lingered (location unknown), a painting based on Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem entitled Alastor, about a melancholy quest of a poet. Inscribed on the reverse of the present watercolor are lines from the poem, "Among the ruined temples there/He lingered...poring on memorials/Of the world's youth." Also written on the reverse of this artwork is "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," which refers to Moran's 1859 painting, Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came (Madden Museum of Art, Denver), which itself was inspired by Robert Browning's poem by the same name. Although it is unknown who wrote these lines on Untitled (Ruins), it is clear that the composition, with its small, lone figure that gazes out at the vast landscape full of architectural remains, was inspired by the Romantic and Sublime movements of the 19th century. Though small in size, the watercolor showcases the powerful talent and strong imagination of Moran, as well as his interest in contemporary literature, an inspiration he would return to throughout his career.

Collection of Charles and Margôt Nesbitt This painting will be included in Stephen L. Good, Phyllis Braff, and Melissa Webster Speidel's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work. It is also listed in an undated, handwritten ledger page from the artist, held in the archives of the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Provenance: Myron Buttram Charles R. Nesbitt, gift from the above, c. 1970s Thence by descent to the present owners Lot note: In 1757, British philosopher Edmund Burke put forth an influential theory of the sublime, famously defined as “a sort of delightful horror, a sort of tranquility tinged with terror; which, as it belongs to self-preservation, is one of the strongest of all the passions.” Distinct from the straightforward pleasure typically derived from the merely beautiful, the theory posited that the experience of the sublime should trigger a feeling of danger. This, in turn, would stir emotions akin to awe and reverence, precisely because the perceived threat never materializes and the person witnessing a sublime phenomenon, far removed, is preserved from harm or death. The notion of the sublime greatly informed the Romantic aesthetic of the 19th century. Chief among the Romantics, J. M. W. Turner established a powerful visual conduit for the feeling of quiet dread induced by sublime events through his vivid depictions of the force of nature. He excelled at representing awe-inspiring, blustery atmospheric conditions that convey not only the inclement winds and rains lashing the landscape, but also imbue the scene with expressive light and color that pierces through the stormy skies and invokes a transcendental power aimed to humble the viewer. In the lineage of Turner, whose work he examined firsthand and copied assiduously during a visit to London in 1862, Thomas Moran also widely contributed to the pictorial language of the sublime. Mid-Atlantic Seascape offers an immersive experience, casting the vastness of the tempestuous ocean as both within reach – its turbulence is nearly palpable – and beyond comprehension all at once. The towering waves, roaring and crashing throughout the expanse of the canvas beneath a menacingly leaden sky, envelop the beholder, save for the distant, peering light on the horizon. The whole composition poetically emphasizes human finitude against nature’s immensity. The painting offers a sublime experience as it compels imagination, presenting a nebulous reality which the sole faculty of reason cannot fully contend with. A late work in Moran’s oeuvre, Mid-Atlantic Seascape encapsulates the natural grandeur that the artist strove to convey throughout his career.

THOMAS MORAN The Rapids above Niagara.

              Est: $1,000 - $1,500

THOMAS MORAN The Rapids above Niagara. Etching printed in dark brownish black, 1885-86. 150x204 mm; 6x8¼ inches, full margins. Signed in pencil, lower left. A very good impression of this scarce, early etching. The Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art, Tulsa, where there is a pencil and gouache study of Niagara Falls by Moran (1837-1926), notes that, "When Moran visited Niagara Falls in 1881, he would have found it surrounded by factories, tourist venues, and gift shops. The waterfall attracted fifty thousand to sixty thousand tourists every year by the 1850s. There were no regulations to curtail development, so entrepreneurs flocked to the area to invest in tourism and, for those with enough capital, industry as well. Thus, both lumber mills and tacky souvenir stores sprang up within sight of the falls. One would not know this from the many sketches, etchings, wood engravings, and oil paintings that Moran and other artists of his generation created of the famous cataract."

The Collection of Philip and Judith Sieg, Bellefonte, Pennsylvania This lot will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work being prepared by Stephen L. Good, Phyllis Braff, and Melissa Webster Speidel. Provenance: Isaac Arnold, Sr., Houston, Texas Berry-Hill Galleries, New York (as Punting on the River Cam, England) Acquired from the above by the present owners, 1979 Exhibited: University Park, Pennsylvania, The Pennsylvania State University Museum of Art, Bellefonte Collects, August 13 - October 22, 1989, no. 19, p. 20 Lot note: Though best known for his images of the American West, Thomas Moran visited many other far-flung locales for artistic inspiration, including Mexico, Europe, and other regions across the United States. During these trips, the artist would execute numerous realistic, on-site sketches. After returning to the studio, the artist combined these views with his broad knowledge and experience of the known world to create pleasingly imagined compositions that widely appealed to his audience. Punting on the Cam, England, 1885, a depiction of a placid English river with a group of people in a punting boat, may be such an idealized amalgamation. In 1882, Moran, his wife and fellow artist, Mary Nimmo Moran, and their children, traveled to Thomas's hometown of Bolton, England, where he had emigrated from in 1844. While in Bolton, the artist and his wife mounted a large exhibition at Bromley's Art Gallery. The exhibition proved to be a great success with the public, as well as with art critics. John Ruskin himself purchased two paintings and six etchings (including three by Mrs. Moran) and ordered a set of Moran's Yellowstone chromolithographs. Moran greatly admired Ruskin's writing and was probably elated by the approval of the critic. In addition to their time in Bolton, Thomas and Mary traveled to Strathaven, Scotland (Mary's birthplace), Glencoe Pass, and Fingal's Cave, Staffa (Gilcrease), where they both made numerous sketches. Once back home in New York, the drawings done in England became inspiration for Moran in finished works, sometimes years later. The present artwork of lush, deeply shadowed greenery resembles the bucolic banks around Cambridge along the River Cam, which remains a popular place to punt. The distant church in the background, however, bears a strong resemblance to Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. It is unknown where the present title of the painting came from or if Moran visited either locale, but this does not reduce the painting's virtuosity. The dynamic, light-filled composition, with its striking color effects and distinctive handling of light and air draws inspiration from Joseph Mallord Wiliam Turner, whose canvases Moran viewed on a trip to Europe in 1861. Like Turner, he did not intend his artworks to be literal records, but to be personal visions inspired by nature, once stating: "All my tendencies are toward idealization. A place as a place has no value in itself for the artist."

It is described in the American Art Association catalog of 1886 as "One of the picturesque forest scenes common to the extreme Long Island coast." Moran painted this favorite scene a number of times as it was just a few minutes away from his studio in East Hampton. In March 2012, a new record was set by Brunk Auctions for a Thomas Moran watercolor titled, Cliffs of Green River-Wyoming Territory which sold for $1,700,000. The significance of that work was in part due to the provenance, which could be traced back to the artist and was documented through a photograph of the painting in the home circa 1895. It was also noted in an early family inventory. This painting comes from the same collection and was likely acquired around the same time as Cliffs of Green River. This painting will be included in Phyllis Braff, Melissa Webster Speidel and Stephen L. Good's forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the artist's works as #1077.
